Recently I went through the experience of bad shed/infected tail and could not find any information about it online. So I just wanted to post my experience (I had on another forum too...I'm just going to copy/paste what I wrote there.) Hopefully this can help someone in the future. Pix below.
(Dec 12, 2015) Soungaa had a bad shed, tail tip died and is rapidly spreading. Took to vet Thurs. She gave me antibiotic gel Terramycin (same as my cat received for an eye infection.) Prescribed Epson salt baths and gel applied to tail 3x daily. She said the tail would all end up like the tip, then fall off. She said it cannot feel the tail pain (which appears true) and is otherwise very healthy (Soungaa has appetite and energy.) I just wanted a second opinion, has this happened to anyone else before? Will the tail just shrivel up and fall off on it's own? She is a reptile vet only, so I assume it's true, but seems odd?
(Dec 30, 2015) My topic wasn't approved until a couple of weeks after I posted. But I thought since I could not find much information online about the leopard gecko infected tail, I'd share my experience. So the pic above was the original tail, when I first posted. I gave Soungaa the baths and medicine as prescribed but tail got worse. Pic below:
(Dec 30, 2015) Today (Dec 30) the vet had to amputate. I considered trying to make him drop the tail to save $177, but after lots of reading, I understand the infection, etc. risk. The vet didn't send home any meds and Soungaa goes back in a week to have stitches out and check out the healing. Hopefully this info will help out someone in the future. Photo below of amputee:
