So I recently came into a huge tank for a really cheap price (I'd say it's around 40 gallons) and of course my first girl Sobe got first dibs right away! But then I started thinking that this tank is large enough to fit another gecko. So I bought a new leo and it was still quite young so I put that one by itself in a 10 gallon for the first three months of owning it for safety purposes and also because it was still young and too small to be placed with an adult leo. So now, Koopa as she is now named is just about the same length as Sobe and now that I know it is another girl, I want to start making preparations into getting her into the larger tank.
Yesterday I introduced them for the first time in a neutral space (it was a tall box with a screen through the center) because I wanted to gauge their reaction. Koopa mostly stayed off to the side and Sobe seemed very interested but not aggressive so I removed the screen. Koopa still stayed off to the side and Sobe began to investigate her by smelling her back side. I was really paranoid about it though because Koopa is still not completely used to being handled and I didn't want her to get stressed out so I ended the meeting. I'd say it went well enough but I'm still worried, I'd like to house them together but I won't do it unless I'm absolutely sure that they will get along. Sobe is really tame and laid back but I know that that doesn't always apply when it comes to another competitor coming into your home.
I know that if I do put them together that I need to add several hides to the environment and clean and move things around so that Sobe doesn't get territorial over what she already has established in her home.
Does anyone have any other advice? Is my method of introduction a sound one or is there something else that could work better? I know it's pretty much up to them but I'd like to at least make the best attempt to make this work!
