Is 78F-82F good for leos?

How important is temperature?

I'm a little concerned that I'm not keeping my geckos at the best temperatures. I've read somewhere that you should keep them around 85F during the day and then around 75F at night. Unfortunately due to the airconditions in my apartment I would say the tank is always around 78F-82F. Would this be a problems long term? Right now both my geckos are happy and healthy. I'm just worried about any long term affects this may have. I use heat pads to keep one side of the tanks hot and there are shelters on both the hot and cold sides.

Thanks for your input.

You need an undertank heater (UTH) to provide a warm spot at around 90 degrees for your gecko's tummy for about 1/3 of the geckos habitat. They need this for digestion, immune system, and metabolism.

What exactly is a UTH or what does it look like? I have a heat pad which sticks to bottom of my tank and when i feel the surface of where it is in the tank it feels pretty warm although I haven't taken a precise temperature of the ground.

Under Tank Heater... just another name for a heat pad. :) You should invest in a thermometer to monitor your temps on the warm side to make sure the heat pad is holding the proper temps.

ReptileSupply.com had thermometers on sale right now for $5.09 + shipping. But as long as your getting other things, its way worth it. Because they were on sale I have two thermometers in every cage so I can monitor how warm the warm side is and how cool the cool side is... Definetely a good investment.

I believe I found what your talking about. Would I place the sensor probe on the floor to measure what the ground temperature near the heat pad is?

Where exactly should you place thermometers to get the most accurate readings? Close to the floor, where the geckos are?

Yes the probe should be on the floor over the heat pad because that's where the leos lay to digest their food. You just want to make sure it's not too hot so they don't burn their little bellies. :)

Thanks. The floor of the tank has reptile carpet on it so the leos aren't in direct contact with the heat pad. The heat pad is stuck under the glass of the tank which is under the reptile carpet so hopefully it doesn't get too hot for them where the heat pad is. I guess I'll place the sensor on the carpet where the heat pad is because that's where the leos would be. (right?)

Thanks alot everyone! I think I'll look into buying that thermometer! :main_thumbsup:

I live in Canada--its a little chilly in the winter. My tank was a bit cool--similar to yours. We don't have air conditioning, and in the hot summer days the tank has reached just over 92 on the hot side. I've noticed the gecko is eating way more, pooping daily and gererally more active at night. Its a SHTCT and her colours have really brightened as well. I've got a big tank and have trouble maintaining high temps in winter--I'm using a ceramic heat lamp and a UTH on the warm side. The gecko was healthy before--nice think tail, but the warmer temps definitely help.
