okay so here's my question...on the 20-gallon. Can i house 1 male leopard gecko with 2 female leopard geckos in a 20-gallon for about 4 or 5 months? My question for a 40-gallon is can i keep 10 leopard geckos in it for at the most 3 years or can i keep them in their longer. I need to know because i have 1 male and 2 female leopard geckos now but my dad said i can get more and i am, i'll be getting at the most 7 more geckos for a total of 10. please respond!!!:behead:

20 - male with 2 females isn't good if you don't want babies
40 - 10 geckos is bad.

Imagine 10 people in a room that's the size of a smaller living room. That's pretty much what it equates to.

The max i would put in a 40 would be 4-5 and that would be all females. I wouldn't house a male with any females unless you have an incubator as well as the housing for the hatchlings.

In your situation i would refrain from getting so many geckos until you can house them comfortably.

well i probably should have mentioned this earlier but i do want hatchlings because i'm a breeder.but i am not getting them all at once and i have an incubator and housing for the hatchlings and considering what u just said about housing them comfortably i can because i can just buy a 100-gallon or 65-gallon terrarium for them. Thanks for warning me!

I probably should have said this earlier but i won't hatchlings because i'm a breeder. also i have an incubator housing for the hatchlings and surplus supplies, and considering what u said about housing them comfortably i can just house in a 100-gallon or 65-gallon terrarium . But thanks for the info and warning me.

Well you will have to figure out then how you would want to do the breeding then. if you have 9 females to 1 male in a tank and a few lay boxes. Unless you watch every gecko lay it's eggs you will not know what the pairing was. As a buyer if i was looking for a pet i might swing your way. But as a collector there is no chance due to having that many geckos in one tank breeding it's near impossible to determine what is what.

Possibly re-thinking housing or possibly rethinking to breed or not is something that should be considered. People want to know what they are buying and in your setup that you're talking about you can't give 100% accurate info.

I don't advise housing that many geckos together, even if they are all females. From experience I know that there are sometimes issues with dominant animals being agressive toward others, and also there are concerns with disease control. Before jumping into breeding I would suggest getting a lot more information, and also look into the costs associated with breeding. The last thing I would want to see is for you to not be able to afford the safest and healthiest accommodations or food for your animals.

i'm keeping all the different morph females in the 40-gallon or 65-gallon and keeping the male in the 20-gallon and putting only one female of some morph in with him to breed. so i will know what the morph is!

It's a risk i would not be willing to take but if you feel comfortable with it then so be it. I warn you of the stress the females will have being in one tank as well as breeding/egg laying takes a toll on the geckos as well.

I wouldn't do it. If you really want to breed, wait till you grow up and get your own place so you can do it a little more responsibly. I don't have a rack system, but I use a converted bookshelf type thing, to easily house 7 geckos in 6 cages (and gecko number 8 in a tank). Everyone lives seperately except for a pair that has been together since babies and I've always monitored very closely for bullying, but they do swell. I won't keep any other breeding pair together all year though, or ever introduce a third female to the one pair.

Since you are living with your parents I think you need to talk to them to be sure they understand what will go into breeding, as well as learning a little more about it yourself. You don't want this hobby to cause family strife.

Oh! beleive me if you say i need to get a rack system then i'll just buy like 4 40-gallon tanks. Trust me i have sources and i know breeders myself and i'm doing the best i can and they think the way i have it set up is fine. But don't start dissing them because they have been doing it for years and are great at it. Also my parents are more than happy that i'm breeding the leopard geckos!

These are just personal views, if you feel as if your way of doing something is best for you then do it. But please don't think that we are personally attacking anyone. Just attempting to give you want you wanted. which was others advice.

Why ask for anyone's advice since you are trying to make it seem as if you know everything already?

Well i am a complete idiot on breeding, i have never done it. I'm super scared but i have done my homework and as long as tab A goes into slot B and the tadpoles do their job and i dont' screw up temps, i should be ok. Fear is always a good thing the first time you do something. If you're not scared then most likely you'll screw up.
