Thermostats are expensive though, so is there a way to set up one thermostat to multiple tanks? Their price is the reason I didn't buy one...

Some thermostats are built to handle multiple heating elements and have multiple probes.

Thermostats are not that expensive considering the job that they do. They are a lot cheaper than the vet bills and replacement heating element and potentially ruined enclosure that you risk by not using one. That twenty bucks won't seem so steep when the vet is explaining how you're going to need a few hundred to cover the examination and treatment of a burnt gecko.

It can... but it requires constant monitoring on your part to make the adjustments every time the ambient temperature in the room changes and is far more prone to malfunctions and accidents.

ive been using the lutron dimmers from home depot and they have worked fine for me. not as accurate as something more expensive, but it gets the job done.

also, if your under tank heater that gets way too hot, like 120 degrees, you should put more substrate on the bottom. its a simple trick to attenuate the heat getting to your gecko. do this until its a more reasonable temperature, then use the dimmer to set it in the low 90s.
