is it true that geckos do not have a high success rate of living after prolapse?

someone said its very unlikely that he will make it and that it would cost less to go ahead and get another one. they said that the vet would only try to get me to euthanize it becuase there is nothing they can do..? im really scared and i know i have only had him two months but im really attached to Kazuya.

Just remembering cases on this forum, it seems to correct itself a lot. I personally do not know if a hemipenis prolapse is different, though. Just make sure it doesn't dry out and do what Marcia said. Get the vet ASAP and stick through it. Don't give up.

First off, who ever told you it would cost less to buy another gecko, CARES NOTHING ABOUT THE ANIMAL! It doesnt matter how much it costs, if your animal can be saved, it deserves to be saved! Your mother ever say, well it would be cheaper to have another baby then take you to the emergency room to get checked out? Sounds pretty stupid huh? Think about it. As far as the prolapse part, there are 3 types of prolapses. A prolapse of the hemipenes a gecko can survive from. They either help him get it back in, or amputate it. Ive heard that the prolapse in females(i forget what its called) there is a chance that they woulnt survive. There can also be a prolapse of the rectum. Which they can survive. Have you tried sugar baths?

curious, if it costs less to just buy another gecko, what do you plan on doing with your prolapsed one? just allowing it to suffer until it adventully dies a slow and painful death?

whoa, trizzy. i never said anything about getting another gecko. kazuya has an appointment at three tomorrow. thast the only time they had available. im new to this. so i had been asking. i have only had Kazuya two months,and it cannot possibly be a hemipenis becuase its only 5 months, so i figure its a bacterial prolapse. im just scared and it totally crushed my spirit when someone said i would b wasting my time taking him tomorrow. and i was confirming.

You are never wasting your time unless you bring a dead gecko into the vet expecting to leave with it alive. Just do whatever you can for it. Has it changed at all? Have you done the sugar baths? Don't let it dry up.

i have sugar bathed.. i had to FORCE it to sleep on a moist towel..i have even wrapped him up in gauze, (which by the way REALLY irrated him since it was restricting its movement, which cause Zuzer to bite me for the first time ever) but im just really scared. i dont want to lose my little baby, but i dont want to go in there with all the hope in the world. i did ,but when they said that...it shook my world, u know?

im really pissed at the store owner becuase he didnt know exactly HOW old it was..he guessed 3 months (and i have had him two) and then when i showed him what was wrong with Kazuya he said..he may have gotten excited and got its penis stuck...which confused me becuase if u cant SEX them till about 8 months, and they dont GROW sex organs till they are about a year old...

sounds like a possible rectal prolapse. Get your gecko to the vet ASAP

I don't think that's true. I believe they always HAVE the organs, they just aren't visible until they are about 30-40 grams (couple months). I could be wrong, though...

sorry for going off the deep end, the way you worded your first post, it looks like someone told you its easier/cheaper to just buy a new gecko.....

I believe that was her point. Someone told her to do that, which made her think it wasnt fixable. And you responded as if that was what she was doing. Just a misunderstanding I think...

Males ALWAY have hemipenes ... just like baby boy humans always have a penis. It just doesn't become large and functional til puberty. Generally speaking, someone experianced can easily see the difference at around 20g. A gecko can hit 20g in 2-3 months EASY... but it can take longer. Males can become sexually active way before 8 months, it's just not a good practice as younger males will have a problem with prolapse.
