After having my leo for almost 3 months i have finally been able to sex it, and shes a girl! Id like to get another, but im confused about a few things.

Firstly ive been told/read that geckos should be kept in groups as they are quite social, other people say keep them on their own. Which is right?

Next if i do get another to keep her company, would a male or female be best?

Thanks for any advice!

Leopard geckos aren't really "social". They don't need any friends to keep them company and will be perfectly happy on their own. If you did want to house 2 leos together, they would have to be 2 females and they would need to be approximately the same size. Just make sure they don't pick on each other and if one starts to get skinny, get them separated right away.

They are NOT social, so she doesn't need a friend. If you want to house two together females you'd want to make sure you have a large enough setup with plenty of hides. However even when you do this it does not mean they will get along and you should be ready to house them alone at any given time. You do not want to house 1.1 as a single female will be stressed from being constantly harassed by the male. It's also best to wait till they are all of the same adult size to keep the compitition and bullying at bay.

I've kept breeding groups of 1.3 together all year round with much success but it's much easier when you have a larger collection to work with, as not all will work together. I had one female that would not play well with others and could not be successfully housed within a group. I have since stopped keeping groups, but I may start again since I'll be starting breeding again soon.

my experience

My experience with keeping females together....I have had many (10) of the females together as pairs. They got along very well, and they did Socialize with each other. When I purchased more tanks each female got there own 20 long. I had numerous seperated females go off there food and get depressed, yes depressed. Once I returned them with there room mate they started eating again and became active again. They even snuggled when they were returned together.
Maybe I look to deep into their social behaviours, but how do we know how they think about having room mates, we can't read their minds. I say they are social animals just by watching their actions with one another. And yes their are some who bully and want their own space but out of my 20 females I have only experienced this twice.
Just my opinon and observation. It's your call, just make sure to watch them and watch for any wounds or weight loss.

I have 4 females in a 50 gallon tank housed together and they get along great. They are always hanging out together and even seem to snuggle with each other in the hides. I had to take one out for medical reasons and she was not happy about it, just paced back and forth in her seperate cage like she was looking for her buddies.
I think if the animal is never introduced to another than it's fine or if for a short while it shouldn't be a problem but if you have them together for a good amount of time I wouldn't seperate them short of medical reasons. That is just my opinion and experience. But there isn't anything I have seen that says you should keep them seperate, except for the males of course.

Thanks everyone. I think i will try housing her with another female soon, but just keep a close eye on how they get on.
