This was my first true attempt at doing this. It's been fun watch this process.

Jeane, Not that hard to do, but it took a long time just to get to these little guys. I separated the worms on 9/2. Got beatles about two weeks later. I think I started seeing these little guys about three or four weeks ago, but they are now big enough to get good pics of. I also just put the beatles into a new tub, I prob. should have done that a while ago. I don't know if the beatles will eat the worms.

I have been adding beatles to the group every once in a while when I find a pupae. I'm hoping to keep this going. Will find out sooner or later if it saves me much money at all. Between the food and bedding, (all homemade) cost, and comparing it to buying the worms, and shipping, it may save some. Once again, when my HERP ROOM IS DONE, (LOL) I'll have more room and get a drawer system setup for them and will be able to keep track of the cost better. Right now I'm just so busy trying to get stuff done in my house, remodeling is a pain.

Oh and you can't imagine what this has done to my fear of bugs. Well feeding my leos has helped that A LOT! But keeping beatles to breed! wow I just picked up the little suckers today and put them in another tub, and I didn't even have the hair on the back of my neck stand up and say wtf are you doing. LOL

Congrats felicia! If you keep it going and separate as many worms as you can to turn to beatles it will save you money. Your probably still going to need to buy some but not as often as you used to. Hurry up and make some more beatles before the others die! lol

LOL Brandy, thanks. I plan on keeping it up, but I'm getting short on room in my office till the room is done in the basement. I have plenty of rack space available but since I've got eggs cooking I don't want to take over the rack with worms right now.

I got meal worms to breed on a consistent basis for about 4-5 months and all of a sudden they stopped mating, I don't know if they got too old or what but I haven't even been able to get the pupate to change over. Oh well it's not that expensive since I don't have as many gecko as the rest of you do :p .

I dunno for some reason they creep me out, I was sitting in the floor the other night feeding one of my geckos one and then I dropped it on my leg (I use tweezers) and I just about had a heart attack!!! lol my dad came running in here thinking I was dying. LOL

Make sure your gutload is always not chunky because picking out 1000 beatles by hands takes forever and 324908230 boxes of tissues! Congrats, i just seperated my sueprs last night

Haha, I'm used to picking out regular mealworm beetles one by one with a tweezer, I have 4 YEARS of practice! Now I can move ~500 beetles in less than half an hour! LOL But I still can't get myself to pick one up by hand, nor can I touch a cricket or superworm beetles...roach nymphs are fine though, I have no problem with them at all.

Paul, I use a blender to make the gutload real fine.

I used to use tweezers too. but it took way to long. Now I just dig right in and grab the little suckers.

You know, I started up two tubs of mealworm colonies, ya know for the heck of it. I stopped feeding one mealworm colony. No moisture, it's STILL producing baby mealworms. I stopped feeding it a month ago! *rolls eyes*

I do find that my mealworms that come from my colony are very light in color, active and FAT. Much better than what I get from the supplier. However I owe it all to Pro Geckos Gutload I think :)

Bonnie I separate all my mealie beetles and worms by tweezers too. I just don't like to touch them.

I breed all my own mealworms and have for a while. I'm now pupating super worms to start that colony.

Cool, I have a huge mealie batch around the same size sa your supers.

I also have about 4 superworm beetles (just noticed them tonight) along with 5 or 6 more that should finish pupating any day. With the supers, I am more breeding them for the experience of breeding them, rather than because I really need them as a food source (I have a few geckos that eat them semi regularly, but not in amounts that isn't very cheap to buy...).. but nonetheless I am looking forward to watching the process!
