I've recently decided to go into bird rescue since birds are the one animal I've had pretty much my whole life...It took that beautiful Thick Billed Parrot in the Cinncinnati Zoo to rekindle my love for anything avian...After losing my beloved Lutino Cockatiel Shriek almost 5 years ago, I haven't had the heart to even think about having another bird...I'm actually getting another Cockatiel from a breeder in the Detroit area...she produced this clutch just for me and my little baby (who is, as of now, still unnamed) just hatched December 7th. I'm never planning on breeding birds...I just love them...they're so social and there are so many people out there who get into a larger bird that don't fully understand all that comes with them...

If anyone is in need of a bird rescue or knows someone who does...I'm willing to drive 12 hours to pick up a bird...I'm trying to focus mostly on the larger species as they are the ones who seem to end up the most neglected and have a harder time being rehomed.

I've also changed my field of study back to my original plan from a very long time ago...I'm persuing Veterinary once again, specializing in reptiles and birds.

Here is a pic of me and that amazing parrot from the zoo....one day I may become very involved in the conservation of this species...since the Carolina Parakeet is now extinct...The Thick Billed Parrot is now the only parrot that has a natural range within the US...

First of all congrats on taking a huge step & going for it! Best wishes with the bird rescue. Even better luck with the schooling. I wasn't even aware we had a real parrot in the US. Now I have to go look it up.

The keyword in that is "Natural".... When I lived in Hialeah, FL there were many flocks of wild parrots. They are mostly imports that have escaped and settled in south FL. From McCaws to Cockatiels and Parakeets they are flying in south FL wild, free and beautiful!!

Good Luck Jill. You've got your hands full with that endeavor.

yeah, until my trip to see Andrea (Crestedgeckogirly) and Jen (JS Rhacs) I also had no idea that there was a parrot that was a US native

I never got to see the wild flocks like that when I was in FL, it's amazing how well they adapt to new environments.

Thanks for the well wishing...one thing at a time...I'm hoping to be in Lansing at MSU at the latest 2012...first my bachelors at SVSU

Ive never seen them but theres said to be plenty of places in NY (as in NY, NY, the city and buroughs) where escaped pet parrots nest in trees, on buildings, and on lamp posts.

yeah, but most of those birds don't last long, they have no idea of how to survive in that habitat...most are picked off by predators and those that survive are taken by the harsher climates
