what are some things someone who lives from or sells geckos does different than the average gecko breeder?

I have a lot of rack space since i have a new rack and plan on getting a lot more geckos. So I want to see if I can actually have a side project of breeding and selling geckos.

If I understand right, the difference is amounts of geckos. The average breeder has 300 geckos, a breeder who makes a living might have 800-1,000.

It's been said before, but I'll do the honor this go 'round...

The only way you're going to make big money is by offering something new and unique. There are far too many well established breeders (5-10+ years) to allow a new breeder to step in the game just by bringing more of what's already available. So unless you're debuting a new morph (non combo of course (excluding super designers i.e. Super Raptor, SS+recessive+Enigma, MSBBB, MSPBA, etc...)) you're just going to be another name on an ever growing list...

Wow! I only have 30ish, give or take a few, and I thought that was about average...

Yeah I think you are off a bit Marcia you have 100-200 geckos right? I know a few breeders that have 20-50 geckos and make a little and honestly LITTLE money so I think your numbers are a bit large.

I think it's probably just a difference in motivation and risk. Those who do it as a hobby aren't at the same risks that those who rely on it for income are. Other than that, I don't think there are any definitive differences.

And I don't think quantity has anything to do with it. If 300 geckos magically appeared in your racks, there's absolutely no guarantee that you're going to make a living off of geckos. There's FAR more that goes into it than just head count.

Agreed Paul! In addition to numbers, you need dedication to customer service. That could mean spending a lot of time on the phone and online. You need good tracking systems to be certain the right geckos get to the right person at the right time. Marketing is a must. The "big" breeders didn't get there by accident. They put their name out there in websites, ads, and doing shows. And that's just to start!
