Ants are a huge problem here in Key West for my reptiles and arachnids. The ants ebb between black sugar or the brown piss ants (very tiny and light brown/tan) the piss ants have a nasty pinch and it feels like a straight pin jabbing the same place, but only hurts for a few seconds; right now the brown piss ants are everywhere, they can squeeze through the thredded lids on jars to get to the contents.
To protect the ants from going after your beloved reptiles and arachnids is this trick:
Put vaseline around the glass enclosures in a thick wide band that deters them so they stay away. If you don't, they tend to swarming and there is a problem. Ants go after the poop, water leftover food, and mulch.
So if you have ant problems use vaseline. Better yet, a double whammy is a mote, find a pan wider than your vivarium by 5 to 8 inches (the wider the better, makes it harder for them to try to cross) and at least 3 inches deep or more, fill with water and use 4 glazed non porous pots to raise the tank/vivarium, add an extra one for stability if needed. Put vaseline around the pots making it thick and wide ( two to three finger lengths).
This is good for pets as well. I have 2 old sauce pans that is wide enough for a mote and vaseline on the outside rim (double whammy). :main_thumbsup:
