Lay Box

My daughter has had her girl for a year and a half and we just put a male in with her. Now for the lay box what is suggested medium and should hole be in the top or on the side? Everyone is so helpful and my daughter and I thank you all for that.

Most of mine are in the side, they do kick out a lot of eco earth.. but I figure when they are done laying if they want to climb out its more difficult for the to do so when they are exhausted and the hole is in the top. They can climb into it though with a hole being cut into the lid.
