Hello, I am thinking about building my own shelters or hides etc in my tank. What type of material is best to use for making structure? I have read silicone glue will hold it to the side of the tank but thats the only reptile friendly resource I could find in forums etc.

Look up the Styrofoam displays. You basically build your hide or background out of the Styrofoam and then cover it in thin layers of grout, paint and seal with animal safe sealer.

as long as your base material is relatively safe ( wood, styrofoam, plastic, etc.) you can add a solution of titebond II wood glue for texture, waterproofing and to make it nontoxic. be sure to do a few layers, compleat coats ;)
