Leo shopping list and a couple questions

I made a shopping list of everything I will need for my future leo. Let me know if I'm missing anything.

20 Gallon Enclosure
Cobra Heating Pad
Infrared Bulb and Fixture - Maybe
Repashy Calcium Plus
Slate Tile
3 Hides (one will be the humid hide)
Fake Plants
Background
Food Dish and Water Dish
2 Thermometers
Thermostat
Leopard Gecko Manual by Phillipe De Vosjoli
Mealworms
Plain Oatmeal Bedding
Mealworm Container

Does anyone know of any good thermostats? I know of the Herpstat, Helix, Ranco and Johnsons but they're a little too expensive. Are there any good ones that I can get at Home Depot?

Thanks ^-^. I don't think I will need other supplements since the Repashy Calcium Plus is a complete insect dust. The feeding supplies will be a peace of cake so I didn't put them on the list :)

You don't need the humid hide in there all the time, so I would go 3 hides, none being a humid hide, and when your gecko goes into super shed mode, put the humid hide in there. You also don't really need the Gecko Manual. You have us and the care sheets for free! :D

You also only really need 1 thermometer. The hot side is all that matters. The cool side will always be room temperature or a little warmer, and the middle side is just a few degrees off of the hot side.

Another thing: Because you are using slate, you will need a more powerful under tank heater. Cobra heat pads are always getting love from members on this forum. I'm buying one very soon. You can get them on Reptiledirect.com I am also using slate and have a 20 gallon. I was recommended by Dog Shrink to use the 11 x 11.

I assume the infrared is for night viewing?

I would check your local craigslist for the tank.

When it comes to thermostats, you want one you can easily plug your uth into. That way there is no fire hazard and it is just all around easier for you. I would recommend a rheostat. You can get one on reptile direct.

Since you are asking about good brands, the one on reptile direct is repti temp and is 18.60

You might also think about getting a backround.

Fake plants are also really good to have. They add a more 3 dimensional look, and are very ascetically pleasing.

I think thats all. You might also look into a wire tank lid, or make one as I am.

Hope I helped! If you have more questions feel free to ask them in this thread.

okay then sounds like your all set.

And i dont really know much about all the supplements in america cuz im from britain. So im sure youve gbt it covered.

Well done on getting a book too, if you ever consider breeding i would recommend the book by Ron Tremper called 'the herpetoculture of leopard gecko's' great book.

And last of all, id highly recommend buying from a breeder and not a chain pet store or off craigslist or anything.
Buy a good quality healthy animal from a good breeder.

Good luck :)

EDIT: im not gonna touch on the light situation, cuz i disagree with lights for leo's. there all unnecessary.

The reason why I was going to get an Infrared bulb is because our house can get a little cold in the fall and winter and I was going to use it as a heat source on the cool side because we do not always turn on the heat. Or will having just the UTH hooked to a thermostat be fine?

I plan on getting my tank from a reptile show. I've heard they're really cheap at most reptile shows. I don't really trust craigslist since there have been a couple of killings relating to it where I live.

I'm definitely going to include fake plants and I'm glad you reminded me :) . A background will also look great in the tank so I'll be sure to include that as well.

A humid hide is a great thing to have in a leopard gecko cage. You leave it in there all the time not just when the gecko is going into shed. So you were right in having a humid hide in your tank.

You took the words right outta my mouth. A lot of geckos enjoy spending time in a humid hide even when they aren't in shed.

They had repashy on the list so I think they're good there hon. Also if you can find the book by Ron Tremper I think that one would be the best leopard gecko guide you could get.

Not sure if this is the same guide you mentioned since Phillipe is on both but... just wanted to clarify

Buy both books but the one pictured is the "bible" so to speak tons of great info in it, even with the forums it is a must for all owners. When it comes to calcium powder rep cal makes two. The green can is without d3 use that with almost eve feeding. The pink is with d3 that can be offered alot less maybe once a week at most. Those should be at your reptile shows as well.

Yeah I did see that Jordan but I find that people often work best with visual aides :) I didn't realise the op had gone back and edited their post to include Repashy after your reply.
