Hi all,

Hi have had my leopard gecko for about a year now, but for the last 3-4 weeks he has been walking around his tank with his eyes closed, i took him to the vets to get them sorted (which was not cheap) he opened his eyes and he gave me some eye drops, but then his eyes started to close again, so i phoned them to see what i could do and they said put him in water and try and open them with cotton buds which worked, i have been doing that 4 times and day and been giving his eye drops 4 times a day as-well, but it doesn't seem to be working and im now getting worried because im not sure if he is eating, i have took some pictures to see if anybody knows anyway i could fixed this issue without going back to the vet. :main_thumbsup:

some times he opens 1 eye when i have opened them with the cotton buds but he seems to leave the 1 eye closed as you will see from the pictures

thanks
nick

i know its not cheap but it needs to be done, and good on you for doing it :)

in the last 4 pics its eyes do look swollen, be careful not to touch the eye ball with the cotton bugs as they could scratch the eye.

how long have you been using the eye drops? and how long are you ment to be using them for?
I ask because if its been 7 - 14 day already using the treatment it might be worth going back to see if they can try somthing else.
It the same with any other animal and humans, each gecko can react differently to different medications.

Maxitrol eye drops should normally be used in conjunction with antibiotics.

It might also be a good idea to separate them until its better just encase the healthy one catches any thing. you can never be to careful.

hope he gets well soon

You might try calling your vet and asking what they charge for a recheck. It may not be as expensive as you think. When I bring my geckos in they charge quite a bit ($60) for the initial appointment but only $24 for a recheck visit.

I agree with sausage that his eye does still look swollen and he may need a different medication or combination of medications. I'm no expert but believe Maxitrol is a steroidal treatment which would mean it is used to reduce inflammation. It would need to be used in conjunction with an antibiotic or fungal medication to cure an infection. I also agree that you should separate the two of them until it has cleared up or you risk having twice the problem.

Best of luck with his recovery! Keep us posted!
