Leopard Gecko Question!

is it normal for my Leopard Gecko to soak in his water bowl ?
both my geckos were sitting in their water bowl... not sure what to think

Yea they will soak their bodies to hydrate themselves but get a bowl that is big enough to let them get their whole body but keep an eye on them if you want but they are hydrating themselves

ya it is it just doesnt look like it in the pic. but i got a coconut hut today and put some moss in there so now they are exploring that haha.
so do you know who lives out here in Cali that breeds geckos ?

It probably isn't anything to worry about-

Leos will sometimes soak in response to sickness or impaction. They will also sometimes soak if they are too warm or not getting enough humidity.

I'd double check your cage temps and humidity. I found that my cages do get too dry in the winter so I leave a cup of water and vermiculite (so they can't get in and drown) in the corner of the cage.

If your temp/humidity is fine and your lizard seems to be in generally good health I wouldn't worry about it. Keep an eye out and make sure that they are producing droppings regularly. If there are eating, pooping, and generally active I wouldn't worry about it. If they start spending all their time there, or are showing any symptoms of poor health i'd consult a vet.

I've also noticed that if I ever let a water dish go dry my lizards will immediately curl up in there and fall asleep - you can chalk a lot of things up to leos being generally quirky.

hahah ya i think it didnt have enough humidity they have a new coconut hut so now they are ok and very healthy and they are eating n pooping normally.
i had another question. can i use peat moss for the entire enclosure ? how do i use it ?
does it need to be soaked ? i was going to buy it to replace the repti-sand i have...

It would probably be good to get them off the sand but I'm not sure I'd recommend moss for the entire enclosure. They need some humidity for shedding but are still basically desert animals. It would probably increase the humidity too much and still have some danger of impaction from accidental ingestion while hunting.

Personally I use either a cage carpet, or natural slate tiles. There are certainly other substrates that would work though, just want to make sure that they won't ingest it accidentally and they can't easily catch their nails on it. The peat moss will work great for a humid hide though. Generally I soak it first and wring out the excess moisture before adding it to the hide. If you don't have a humid hide already a tupperware container with a hole cut in the side works great.

i just bought a coconut hut and put some moss in there... but i saw a video on here and it looked like the peat moss was used for the whole enclosure. thats why i asked. i have a repti-carpet but i didnt want to use it because i saw alot of complaints saying they get their jaws and nails stuck in it when trying to hunt.

I've never had a leo have too much trouble with the reptile carpets, although my pictus would get his teeth stuck in it occasionally.

I use a combination of carpet and slate tile in my babies cage. The slate looks great, holds heat well and is doesn't get in the way of hunting. My babies don't seem to like sleeping on the slate though so i have carpet exposed on one corner of the cage under the hides. I don't have a lot of experience with the other flooring options out there though.

I could be wrong on the peat moss - but it seems like it would retain too much moisture and present an impaction risk if used for the whole cage. Hopefully some others on the board can weigh in on this as I could be wrong.

another quick question someone nearby where i live offered me a breeding pair of geckos they are priced at $150 and They are a wild caught pair. They originate from a pure wild caught and his lavender line tremper albino stripe that is poss het eclipse and blizzard. do you think that is a good deal or no ?

but Landen offered me a pair for $140 and thats with shipping.

I would say its a great deal but see how healthy they are but remember they are wild caught and they can be harder to get to eat so see if they eat and also make sure they acting good so yea. Also i wouldnt recommend keeping them with other leos because they are wild and will be terriortal

I would go with Laden because his will be better in my opinon and i think that is the safest idea instead of wild caught leos.

Well there you go that is the best idea and yea Laden has good lookin ones and thats the best beat and i wouldnt do business with the other guy because Laden is legit

Well good i do that and sell on line also hahaha. Also remember lots of calcium and a incubator for the eggs and they need to be at least 50 grams to breed. Also do your home work before you do it. Good Luck
