We are having a blast with our first reptile and first official family pet. We do have a dog but its not the cuddly kind and we got her way before we had kids so they have never really bonded with him, he avoids them hah. So our leopard gecko is our first pet project as a family. I can't stop taking photos of her and googling about them. They really are so fun. A neighbor told us they had one and the first month they had it, it drowned in the water dish and it was really terrible and sad for them, poor thing. I use bottle caps for water so thats not been an issue for us. Anyone else here get one as a project for their kids? We are learning a lot about science and we love looking on maps to find places they originate etc.

I snagged some pics of her tonight that turned out better then I expected!

Glad you're enjoying them! I do think they're really cute and easy to keep pets :). And it's great when you get one that likes to be handled! (We have one of each!). Enjoy!

she is beautiful :). I LOVE geckos sooooooo much especially leos, I currently have 18 :p.

everyone always looks at me weird when I talk to them about my lot. The standard response is "ewwwww" or "it can't be like owning a cat or a dog as they don't have personalities and don't show you love back", and they couldn't be more wrong!

I love that they all are individuals and have completely different personalities, one of my females seems to enjoy my company lol. Obviously you can't tell what their thinking but she likes to climb up onto my shoulder and sit up there while I do things or if i'm watching tv she climbs up and sits on my lap or neck. where as my others can't get away from me quick enough lol.

Any way I digress, It's fantastic that you have taken her on as a pet and a family project. Its wonderful to see that you're all doing in depth research and teaching your children about being responsible exotic pet owners :).

She is obviously well loved and looked after because she looks healthy and gorgeous :D. I hope you all have many many more years of discovery and fun together. This forum is always here for advice if its needed and to share her progress, as we love to see pictures. Well I do any way haha

They are fun, aren't they?

She is your first family pet because dogs are part of the family and not necessarily "pets".

Thank you for the response, nice to know I am not alone! I walked into my room the other day and scared the beejezus out of her apparently, she was for some reason belly down on a hot spot outside of the hides which she never does and I guess she felt vulnerable. Poor thing I felt so bad all I did was walk into the room! She moved FAST its nice to know she can move fast if she wants because she is very cool about sitting in my hand and stuff. If she starts to move fast I always immediately put her in her tank. We LOVE to watch her hunt crickets its just very weird fun to watch. Watching her grow and her pattern change is also really neat. While I know getting a young one you have to be a lot more careful in particular with my kids holding her (I let them about twice a week on average) but it is SO neat watching them grow!
