Light or Dark?

I've decided that I'm housing my mealie colony in a shoe-box for now. But do mealies prefer the dark? I can put the lid on the shoebox to make it completely dark or I can leave it of.
Help would be appreciated, thanks!

I would think they prefer the dark since when they are in the wild they are under logs and stuff. Cause if they were in the light durring the day they would last about 10 seconds before a bird or something found them =)
