Lighting for a custom cabinet

Hello everyone,

I'm going to be starting a project soon two house to 20 gallon long tanks. It will be an upright cabinet 3' wide and about 6 feet tall. Each shelf will be on medium duty drawer slides so that the tanks can be slid out for cleaning and what not.

I had another idea to build in some lighting to this cabinet. I was hoping to do some under cabinet type lighting, something with a low profile of around 1" that I can mount above each tank. Would have to be RED I'm assuming as I do not want it to disturb the geckos that will be living there.

I work at Lowe's and best as I can tell we having nothing like this, lots of white LED ones but nothing red. I've thought about buying the white and soldering in red LEDs but that's a project I don't really want to get into consider the price of the fixtures. Anyone know of some other places I can look to find some affordable red low profile lighting? Doesn't have to be LED, flourescent or xenon would be fine as well...as long as it won't disturb the critters! :main_thumbsup:

If you look on Ebay you can find some inexpensive blue or red aquarium led lighting. That is what I will be eventually using for my custom 'tanks'

I have almost the exact same drawers as you will be building. I bought LED touch/remote control lights from walmart. They come in packs of two and work very well. I could not find lights thin enough to fit in the gap between the drawers so that was an issue. How are you going to heat it? I had the biggest issue with heating than anything.

I purchased 4 puck lights that I attached to the top of my leos enclosures. they came with a switch and the beauty of it all is it is all wireless, lights are LED and run off 3 aaa batteries (rechargeables are a wonderful thing). sadly they are white, but a nice cheap option to change that is go to somewhere that sells auto crap and buy a small roll of red window tint and viola you have red LEDs.

you can buy pretty much any color auto tint you can think of, for us Canadians its just a matter of going to Canadian Tire, not sure where to recommend in the states but I am sure someone can tell you where to go for it.
