I hate the long tube bulbs, I want a light that works for the beardies that's in the normal bulb form....what does everyone suggest?? I'm gonna go pick it up tomorrow
If you want a bulb that produces heat and uv the only ones that I know of are mercury vapor bulbs other than that there are coil bulbs that only produce uv but they tend to fall apart really fast in my experience.
I like the tubes for uv because I can get one that covers the entire tank so I know they always have uv but as far as heat goes I just use regular house hold bulbs since they last the same amount of time plus they don't cost an arm and a leg.
uvb tubes are definatly the way to go, and i place heat tape underneath it so i know that when they are basking they are also getting their proper amount of uvb. As I've noticed when you give them heat lights and uvb buls they spend most of their time under the heat light and very little time under neath the uvb bulb. However I wouldn't reccomend using house bulbs for MANY reasons.
The coil bulbs do provide the correct amount of UV but as was already said-they are fragile
They are supposed to last for a year or so but I have had them break off from the base where they go into the socket after only using them for a few months
I hate the long florescent tubes too
I think the long fixtures for fluorescents are a pain in the butt-LOL

while were on the subject, I'm new to breeding beardies, but reading around it seems as if a 36 by 18 enclosure would be a nice size. would you only house 1 female in that or 2? does anyone have pics of their dragon enclosures that I could see to go off of? I would like to use heat tape, but with the idea of the setup I had in mind I woulnt be sure how to use it.
I've been reading some posts on another forum saying that there has been a link between increased coccidia levels in beardies with using an under belly heat source instead of just an over head one
Not sure why that would be-because they do lay on surfaces that have been warmed by the basking bulbs
I have been using only overhead heat (basking lights)for many years without any other supplemental heating with good results but I had left a uth on a tank that i had put 2 babies into and had mentioned that they definitely liked the hot spot provided by this and
I was warned about the increased coccidia levels with doing this
Just some food for thought
I think that you could house 2 females in the 36 x 18 enclosure if they weren't both extremely large IE GG's
