hi, this may be a stupid question, but how can you tell if a leo is a male or a female?

Not so stupid, sometimes we can all be fooled sometimes. The best way is to look at the preanal pores IMO. Some females can be bulgy so I don't go by those. If it's a small leo, and you have a photographer's or a jewelers loupe you can look at the pores to see if they are actual pores or just dimpled scales. Pores= Male, Dimpled Scales= Female. Someone may be able to post pictures to help you. If it's an adult look at the pores if there's wax coming out of the V shape preanal pores you've got a male, if not it's female.

Well if he/she is very little and you are a little parinoid, it may be best to wait. This way you don't hurt it by mistake. At about 10-12 grams, (or larger depending on your sight and developement of the leo) is good for sexing small ones with a loupe.

Also I have noticed if you really can't hold it for long but can transfer it to a glass bottom or very clear plastic bottom tub, you can look through the bottom and see the pores. However, depending on age and size the pores may not have developed yet and you may think you have a female when really it is a male. Good luck and let us know what it is when you figure it out.

Remember if it is still young you might not be able to accurately sex it. It's best to wait until they are about 6-8 months old. You won't even be able to breed at that age so it's best to wait till you come to a conclusion.

well I was wrong... she is a he, lol.. I guess he's just very VERY young and so it's really hard to see the V-vent, but I do see it and the two little ball things at the base of his tail.
