Maybe a silly humid hide question...

So since learning of the humid hides from this site and thinking what an ingenious way to solve my shed problems they are I've put one in all my geckos' cages (3). And they love them. A lot. In fact, they never come out. So, since the hides dry out pretty quickly I end up squirting the geckos when I re-wet the inside. It doesn't seem to phase them too much, but since I use the same method to deter the roommate's cat from making my parrot a light snack I was just wondering- have any of your geckos gotten irritated by being sprayed in the face every day or am I worrying too much?

What type of substrate are you using to hold th moisture? If you are using moss, it doesn't dry out as quickly. I try to pray it to the side of the gecko but sometimes it slips and hits them when I am in a rush to get done. They don't really seemed too bothered by it. I sometimes have too much pressure behind it and the off spray hits them, that doesn't bother them either. I would just try to avoid it, but if you do hit them, I wouldn't worry too much.

at first they were irritated, but they are used to it now. in fact, i actually think they enjoy it now. they know when i am coming to pray the hide, because i always lift up the top, and some run to get out of the way, and others just sit there and enjoy the shower.

I have 4 leopards that if they are out in the open when I mist in the morning , they will stay out and enjoy the misting. I don't spray them full force just the off spray as I spray some of their cage decorations.

Hmm. Ok. I'm using cloth because I like the idea of being able to wash it. I got some moss a while ago but it got moldy and gross. I'm a little bit petrified of mold as my brother's gecko died when he over sprayed the cage, the cage grew mold and then he ended up in respiratory arrest. I'd rather have to pull of toe-bits every shed (like I've been doing the past 10 years) rather than risk them dying like that... so actually I'm rather happy the cloth dries out so fast. I'm experimenting with different numbers of layers to try to get the moisture to stay a bit longer, though.

I just take the gecko out of the hide then spray the hide....I don't think it was the mold that hurt the gecko. Geckos can get respiratory infections from too high of humidity. It probably got a respiratory infection and that's what did it for it.

we use paper towels. Another thing you can use is peat moss.
