MBD

One of my geckos just hasn't been acting herself. All 3 of our girls have slowed down their eating in the last few months, but the other 2 look excellent. This one's tail has gotten much smaller. She had a hard time shedding on her own and we had to do it for her. She's still been moving around the cage, but just not being quite as active. A few days ago I noticed her knee joints on her back legs looked a little swollen, now they look really swollen and she isn't using her back legs properly. From reading online I think this is MBD. We have made a slurry (canned dog food, crushed crickets, reptile vitamin powder) and just fed her for the first time on it and we got her to keep licking it off her nose, we plan on doing more in a little bit.
My question is how often should be feed her using the dropper and I read somewhere that a vet can do a calcium shot, is that helpful, should I do it? This economy has really affected our family and I don't have the cash on hand to do a vet trip but I could probably work something out with them.

Can anyone help me on this? She is getting worse. She can no longer use her rear legs and has gotten really dull and looks like she is shedding again. When we touch her she seems to be in alot of pain. Also, she is still moving herself around the cage, but seems like she is in alot of pain when she is doing it. Sometimes she will try to wiggle around and will open her mouth up like it hurts. She isn't opening her eyes much and seems really irritated when we try to feed her the slurry. I can't believe how fast this happened. The good news is that the other 2 girls are just fine, how could this just affect one?! How do I know if she's too far gone to help and right now I feel like she is just suffering, can a vet put a gecko to sleep? What should I do?
I don't live in a big city or anything. When I had my dogs in I talked to the vet and she said they don't really see geckos, they have, but they aren't really experts at it. We are barely getting by right now, I can't see spending $100 at the vet if she is going to die anyway, but I can't watch her suffer anymore. Advice???

Hi Brooke,

I'm so so sorry for what has happened to your gecko... you can try this site..it has veterinarian on call 24/7 .. u can message them and somehow get help...but you really should save your gecko.. the vet could give you medicine for your leo and help the mdb to get better...

I hope this helps...
Its never too late for something... u should really try to go to a vet asap, or call someone from the metro area... if you'd like..I can get contact of some vets here that you could probably talk to...

God bless u and ur gecko, ill make sure to add him to my prayers.

If you can get some liquid calcium (NeoCalglucon) you can administer about .2 - .4 cc (ml) twice a day so the calcium goes straight into the blood system. Yes, it is possible to get a calcium injection, but it is different than the oral liquid calcium which is more syrupy.

How exactly do you administer the liquid calcium? Unfortunatly, i have a juvenile showing some symtoms of mbd too :(

I feel sorry for you and your gecko, i hope both you and your gecko pull through.
My advice would to be to try the liquid calcium, add some drops into her water bowl as well.
I regret having to say this, if she is that poorly, and she is getting worse, euthenasia might be the only option to put her out of suffering, HOWEVER please do not consider it unless you have exhausted every other method you can think of.
Keep at the paste and make sure there is calcium and a vitamin d3 supliment.

Thinking of you and your gecko hope she gets better.
