A friend of mine went out of town for Thanksgiving and I am taking care of his pets while he is away. I noticed one of his geckos walking funny and it looks like her leg is a little curved. It looks like she has MBD to me but I would like to get more opinions before I bring it up to him.

I couldn't focus on it long enough but there is something definitely wrong you can see it. Can you see it if she is just sitting there? After watching it a few times it looks like the back right leg is the worse and it does have rubbery legs.

Keith, yeah her back right leg looks curved to me. She is also having trouble keeping her mouth shut. I started her on some liquid calcium so hopefully that will do the trick.

Good that you are using calcium drops, that will get the nutrient directly to the blood fast. My vet recommends 2 separate doses a day for 10-14 days or until it shows signs of improvement, then regular calci dusting for maintenance. I got the liquid calcium glubionate from him also. Caught early it is possible to reverse but long term cases can become riddled with other issues, including the rubbery jaw. I took in one a while back that was very advanced, it was sad. She would stretch her mouth a lot, drag her body along limping :(

I know with snakes that sometimes they keep their mouths slightly agape when they have upper respratory infections or moutn rot/sores. Sounds like this little one is in all kinds of bad shape. Wht are you gonna do when your friends come back to collect her? Also the back leg looks askew to me too.

Oh that poor little leo. I have a gecko with a pretty good case of MBD. Her legs are very deformed and she cannot lift herself off her belly without looking like it hurts. I would say that this gecko has the beginning case of MBD because it looks very similar to my leo, except much less severe. Hopefully the liquid calcium will help it to stop the progression. I have found that MBD is permanent, but at this point if you get her bones strong again then it shouldn't bother her lifestyle. Good luck with talking to your friend, and I wish the best for her!

Thanks for the info, at first I wasn't 100% sure it was MBD because she didn't have very severe symptoms. I'm just glad I noticed it before it got really bad. Ive already informed the owner about the situation. Needless to say, he wasn't happy about it. Im not sure whats going to happen when he gets back. I may end up keeping her until she gets better. If not then I will give him some liquid calcium and tell him what needs to be done.

You're welcome and honestly if this MBD happened while the leo was in their care they obviously weren't supplimenting/feeding properly. Are they the type you can be bluntly honest with about why this happened in the first place, and what they need to do to reverse and prevent this from reoccuring... or are they more likely to take offense and blame everyone but themselves? If the latter then I think the leo would be better off with you (if you have the space, time and money to care for it).
