i got 2500 mealies a few months ago, and a crapload(for lack of a better word) of them turned into pupa...then beetles. after i got a bunch of pupa, i decided to try my hand at breeding them. well, i keep them on oats in my gecko room. they are in 28 qt rubbermaid totes with no lids. my mealies, and beetles are kept on carrots, apple slices(no seeds, cianide) and orange slices. my gecko room is around 74 degrees , and i have my tubs just sitting on shelves in the room. i dug into the beetle bin a little bit ago and found a "crapload" of TINY mealworms! i also see what looks like millions of eggs! if eggs are tiny little reddish brown dots, what i am seeing is eggs. i started with about 250-300 pupa(now beetles) and i have since gotten a few hundred more beetles, who are breeding(so i now have around 500-600 breeding beetles) and what looks like...a bunch of baby mealies, and a million eggs! i did not really do much other than do some research and payed attention to some small details...and waited. so i think i may have to start selling mealies(if things continue going well, dont wanna speak too soon), or trading them out for stuff...because there is no way 14 geckos are going to eat that many mealies. i think it will be another three weeks before i am feeding out of my breeding stock, but i think if things keep going like this, i wont have to buy mealies anymore! i am also planning on trying my hand at Blaptica Dubia once i get my gecko eggs hatching and the mealie colony going. just wanted to share my excitement and hopefully help anyone who is not having any luck at mealies...i am NOT experienced at breeding mealies, but my methods have so far been successful, hopefully it will continue to do well.
