So i have a rubbermade of mealworms i keep at room temp. I have oats and carrots with them. I know how often to switch out the carrots but what about the oats? When should I change the oats? thanks
oh ok thanks. Oh and some of my worms are turning a dark black color. Why is that? I know they werent when i got them because I counted them out myself from the store I got them at.
You have to remember that meal worms are a larvae for a beetle. They will morph the older they get. They will shed their little exoskeletons as they grow, and sometimes that alters their color. A lot of places you see to store them in the fridge if you intend on keeping them long term. I really can't suggest a set timeframe on changing the oats. I'm sure someone with more experience would have a good answer. With mine I keep them in the fridge, and let them warm up about once a week to eat. I've had them for about a month, and I've noticed some darker color in their chow, so I think it is time for me to sort out and give them new bedding/chow for storage. I do keep mine long term, but don't want them changing into beetles, so that is why I like to keep them dormant in the fridge. They are only used as a treat now and then.
