Mealworm sifting trick

I don't like to mix the sawdust (it is sawdust right?) that mealworms come in from the petstore into the oatmeal bedding I raise them in. But picking out 500 mealies is not how I want to spend my evening and my parents would freak if I used a kitchen strainer to sift mealworms.

So I created the sawdust shaker. I took some extra screen that has been lying around (the kind for screen doors) and cut out a little square. Rubber banded that over the top of the mealworm cup and just shook it over another container. Sawdust comes out. Mealies stay in.

Hope someone finds this trick useful! :)

Haha- I just bought my own mealworm kitchen strainer. Another technique I use sometimes (especially with sawdust) is to blow on it gently so the wood flies away but the mealies stay.

just make sure you clearly label it. i bought a strainer at the dollar store, but coated the handle in bright red duct tape so my roommates know not to use it for food
