Without a scale?

How can I do this with perlite? I do not have a scale currently, and not sure how much water to put in.

I was told to put the perlite into a strainer, and just run water through it for a minute or so.
Would this work?

I don't believe it will. You absolutely need a scale. There's no way around it. You can get a nice digital scale from WalMart in the housewares section.

Yeah, I know.
I have a Super Wal-Mart here in town, and they only have one digital scale for $50.
I keep checking in for new stock, but nothing lately.

Did you check the mailing supplies section? That's where I got mine-- it's a postal scale that works really well and it was only around $20.

If you want to be successful in incubating the eggs, you need to have the odds on your side.

Start by getting a scale to accurately measure the right water/incubation medium ratio. Remember the scale can also be used throughout the leos life as you track it from neo to adult to monitor its weight gain/loss.

A very good scale will run you less then $50. Ask around this forum to see where the best deal can be found at for a scale. I got mine for $45 delivered.

I know, and everyone says Wal-Mart.
Haha.
I'll just have to keep looking around.

I use THIS scale and I love it dearly. The best part is that it's only $26.00. May want to pick that sucker up.

That looks like an amazing deal!
Does it come with a bowl? And the setting to still show the Leo's weight with the bowl also on the scale?

What is the shipping on it?

Thanks,
Hayden

Use Vermiculite Trial and error I mix vermiculite all the time without a scale you will get a feel for the right moister content after a while. It needs to stick together when you grab it in your hand like a snow ball, but you should not be able to squeeze any water out of it a drop or two is fine, but slightly on the wet side. When you set your vermiculite snow ball down you should be able to touch it and it should fall apart. Make sure you mix it real good. It may feel a bit dry to the touch, but this stuff holds water good. Check it again in 24 hours and make sure it is still OK for eggs. The course vermiculite is much easier to set up and it works best for most eggs. The humidity is whats important although too much water will kill your eggs. Hope this helps it can be done just take your time. Add water in very small amounts in between mixing and checking. Get an extra bag just in case you goof.

Yep, the scale comes with a bowl and a tare function. It maxes out at 1000 grams though, so it won't be good for ball pythons (or the Godzilla geckos, to be announced in 50 years by Ron Tremper, I'm sure, lol!). It will measure in metric or standard. The resolution is at 1 gram increments. I'm not sure what the shipping is on it but it can't be more than $10, so you'd still be getting a scale for under $50.
