My first reptile of my own! I had red ear sliders as a child, but this is my first reptile (and pet in general) of my own.

Boss is just a baby, me and my girlfriend went and picked him (her?) up at a local pet shop today who gets them from breeders in the area. We went with the name Boss after characters from Metal Gear Solid. We don't know if it's a boy or a girl, but the name sticks both ways (Big Boss or The Boss) so it stuck. I've included a picture of the setup we put together, with temps on the left at 75ish degrees, and the right side at 87. He hid in the staircase hide for most of the night, but has come out to explore whenever I leave the room. The picture is the only spot he's sat in for a long amount of time that wasn't under the staircase. He hasn't eaten yet, but mealworms are chilling in the bowl so we shall see.

I'm in love.

Congrats! Leopards geckos while they're considered beginner pets and are mass produced they are still awesome. Each one has its own personality. I would bet you'll have a couple more this time next year lol. Tanks and setup looks good, only thing I would recommend would be to put the temp gauge you have in the middle down to almost ground level since that's the temp that really matters is where the gecko is. Do u have a UTH?

Yep! I have an Ultratherm, I believe 10x17 connected to a Hydrofarm thermostat. Temps on warm side range from 85-91 depending on the thickness of the tile I point the tempgun at. What sucks is I have to keep it at 106-108 on the thermostat due to thick substrate, but oh well.

The only thing that bothers me is he doesn't really do much. Granted, it's expected, but he really just sleeps in his warm hide (the log) when anyone is around. I don't think I've seen him go in the cool one (staircase) since he found the warm one. He just checked the bowl for mealies, but I already fed him today so it was empty. He crawled back to the log and went back to sleep. I'm sure he's probably still skittish since it's only his 3rd night here, but still, I figured I'd have found him in another hide. Lack of poop was bothering me too, but I found that when I got home from work about an hour ago (in his water bowl, the balls on this one...)

I have read that some Leo's will poop in their water bowls. Means extra cleaning from you, the stinker. Give him/her time, it could take a couple of weeks to become comfortable with it's new surroundings.

Thanks guys! Quick question on the moist hide. HOW moist are we talking? It had water droplets on the top of the inside last I checked.

Congrats on your new addition!

Most leopard geckos are not super active and they are mostly active in the evening. That's when I see mine really moving around a lot.

The moist hide should be wet, but not soaking wet.

So he's now in his warm hide. He was staring out the glass, towards my computer. I looked in there, and he was doing defense tail wagging. I tried talking to him and stuff, and he just moved nothing but his tail. Then, after a bit, he turned around, and went back to it a little. Then stopped, started and stopped again. And he's just sitting there now. Is he defending against me? Or did he see his reflection or something? I think he was already doing it before I even came in the room. It was rather comical.

They wag their tail to be macho and when they're hunting, could've saw his reflection or something he didn't like and started doing it as a I'm a big tough guy thing. Or he could've seen a bug that looked yummy and was trying to hunt it. They're really comical with the silly little things they do.
