Mixing Roaches

Is it possible to mix dubias and lateralis roaches in the same colony? I was planning on starting a dubias colony and thought that I could mix in the lateralis to use as feeders now. Plus it would give my pets a little variety come snack time .

There is no legitimate reason to keep different roach species in the same bin. They do not breed at the same rate among other things so one will eventually outcompete the other. Keep them in seperate bins. You dont keep meat and fish in the same container in the refrigerator. Do not keep different species of roaches in the same container. No good will come of it. . :main_angry:

It was a simple question and no need to get aggressive over it. That's like telling someone their question is dumb, there is no such thing, I hate when folks get on here and act like big bad Leroy Brown, I fell that if you can't be nice then keep your comments to yourself.

Enigma, I don't think digby was being aggressive, he was merely stating there really is no reason, in the end one species will end up dying out, he has pointed out a very good point about the meat/fish thing.

I understand his point and agree but to me the angry emoticon shows aggression, if he didn't mean it that way I humbly apologize, just seems some folks rather chastize then educate

I'd imagine you run the risk of the Lateralis & Dubias giving each other exotic diseases, seeing that their kin come from different sections of the world, far as I know.

Might be possible, however, if you're careful.

Guessd what guys, when it comes to reptiles and feeders I am dumb....... I have spent countless hours reading through this and a couple of other forums trying to learn what I can. This hobby is new to our family but we are finding it quite addictive. We have 2 leo's and pacman at the moment with 4 more leo's on the way shortly. I thought the cheaper lateralis would serve as feeders until the dubias colony started reproducing ... Guess I will just get the lateralis, wonder if the dubias would have been to slow to intice the pacman anyway ???

If you have room for two colonies, I think you should culture both, the dubia will be great for your pac man when it grows larger, and also for adult leos.

if you ever purchase a dubia colony it will often have discoid roaches mixed in. it's not really a problem imo. i haven't worked with lateralis but i don't think there will be any problem at all unless you need to separate them some day.

good luck!

No Chastizing

No good will come of mixing species there is no advantage to it. Besides you asked if it was okay. One can only chastize someone after they do something. Anger was not directed at you. It was solely in regards to mixing species not the potential mixer :main_lipsrsealed:

+1!

I have noticed the same thing when purchasing roaches before. More often than not, when the babies grow up and get larger, you start to notice that they indeed are different species in there.

I currently have Madagascar Giant Hissers (only about 1" rite now tho) in the same tub as my ______ roaches, and they are living and coexisting just fine, and have been for the last 2 months. They are all eating just fine and everybody is getting larger and haven't found 1 dead yet. Obviously, when the Hissers get to be much larger and outgrow the others, i will move them to their own tub, simply because they will be about 10x's the size of the other kind of roach in there, lol. But for now, since they are all relatively the same size, there is no problem.

There is no legitimate reason when ordering a particular species of roach to more often than not end up with different species in the same container or colony. in the 7 years we have been selling roaches only once did a mistake occur and the party was given the wrong species. But they were not mixed. If more often than not one is ordering a particular species and getting mixed colonies it is due to ignoranace, incompetnence and or carelessness. There is no legitimate reason for sellers to more often than not as stated by the posters above, to get species other than what you order.

Mixing is NOT recommended under any circumstances because all sizes of Dubias will eat the baby lateralis and their egg cases.....eventually the lateralis colony will die off of old age. Now, while the lateralises are running around in the culture they will in turn eat baby dubias so you end up with a culture producing no new babies until only 1 species is left. Another issue to consider is that many species of insects produce natural repellants to ward off invaders and their own subspecies so that they do not compete for food in the same territory.......hence, when combining species in an artificial environment, 1 species may not reproduce because of a hostile living condition created by their roommates.

Well my Hissers, and my ******* Roaches are living in harmony together with no problems... so far anywayz... All are eating and growing just fine... Haven't had a dead one yet. Obviously when my Hissers start to really outgrow the others, i will remove them and put them in another tub.
