Hello all! I recently purchased a Zilla brand fir and sphagnum peat moss mix to use for humidity in my leo's moist hide. Is this safe for a leopard gecko? If not I have a brick of eco earth I could use instead. I just want to make sure before I put anything in the tank. Thanks!

I think that should work great. Either of them. The moss you are planning on using, will hold moister longer though.

So an update: I put a new hide in there with the moss mix in there which I sprayed down to keep it humid. Two things: the hide has holes on the side, one of which I covered up with paper to keep light from the window out and keep it dark...is the hide not going to be moist enough with two small holes on the side?

Also, my leo does not seem to like going in there. I have yet to seem in it. Will they gravitate towards a more humid environment when they are going to shed or should he be visiting the moist hide more often?

Yes, he will definitely use the humid hide when shedding (at least, I haven't ever seen a gecko not use a humid hide for shedding if there is one provided). When you made the stuff moist, was the water cold? Maybe it was too cool and he didn't want to go in it right away

Also, the small holes aren't really a problem but I guess could technically be a factor in your medium drying faster. I would tape the holes and just leave the entrance as the only hole :)

I had the same experience wherein my gecko wouldn't use the moist hide. It tok a week before it got used to the new enclosure. Now, it spends most of daytime in the humid hide.

I actually switched out that holey hide for one of those Zoomed 3 in 1 hides to make a nice humid hide for Hobbes, and yes, I did use cold water. I guess I'll switch to warm water to make it more appealing. Thanks everyone for your advice!
