Moist hide

I have always assumed that the moist hide needs to be on the "hot" side of the LG tank but I just saw a set up with the moist hide on the cool side. Is this just preference or does there need to be two hides?

Personally, I think it is more effective on the warm side, but not necessary. I have mine on the cool side because I was more concerned with having the proper temperature gradient in my tubs than having really moist hides. If I ever have a shedding problem, (it's very dry where I live, so sometimes I do have issues with it) then I put some paper towels moistened with warm water into a container that has a lid and put the gecko in there with the lid closed and the container over the heat tape for about 20-30 minutes and the shed usually comes off.

Different people do different things. I keep my humid hides in the middle generally in the 3-hide cages and on the cool side in the 2-hide cages because I don't want the gecko spending all its time in there.

In my 40 gallon breeder I had on in the cool end and one in warm end. The one one the hot end dries out a lot quicker. I recently moved the boxes to the middle with her being gravid, and not knowing which box she'd choose. I wanted to keep the eggs at about 80F until I found them. My tank doesn't really have much of a night drop. In my 10 gallons I just put it in the middle.

I always had it in the middle but found that Dash would get some stuck shed. Since I moved it to the warm side, his sheds have been perfect. His setup isn't traditional though - after moving things around a bit, I found that what seemed to work best for him was two hides - the moist on the hot, an area covered by a plant (not a techinical hide) also on the hot and a hide in the middle/colder side. He has always liked his moist hide the best no matter where it was, so I wanted to make sure he was getting the temps he needed. He comes out and uses his hot spot still, and he even has used his cool hide, which he never did before. I want to get some more plants to give him a bit more coverage, but I wouldn't say he necessarily needs it - he's out and about often.
