Mold Growth and Hatchrite

Hi Again,

I need a bit more advice. My two eggs aren't doing so well. I checked on the better one today, and noticed several spots of mold had formed. Looking at the bottom of the Hatchrite, I noticed a few dark areas at the very bottom of the container (in the mix) as well. I opened the remainder in the bag that I had, and noticed darker spotted piece in there as well (can't tell if its mold in the bag).

I candled the one better egg, and noticed that the bull's eye was still large and red, but saw no veins in the remainder of the egg. I wiped off the mold (see picture, before wiping it off) and am preparing another container to transfer the egg to with a yet unopened bag of Hatchrite.

Both eggs (including the good one pictured) do not smell yet. Should I keep them in a little longer and see? They were laid on the 7th.

Sorry the pictures are a bit blurry -- they were the best I could get. The darker area on at the top of the egg has been there since it was laid. It's not a dent or mold, just a more translucent area.

Thanks!
Sarah

That's wierd you might have mold in the hatchrite. We just tried out hatchrite and there was no black anything in there- just perlite. If it were me personally, I would go to a website like :www.albeysreptiles.com and make my own perlite/water set up. (SIDE NOTE: You can find perlite at gardening stores. The perlite at larger stores will have miracle gro sometimes so avoid that!) Once I made my own id make sure to warm it to the same temperature and transfer the eggs. I can only speak for myself I am not a professional. Hope your egg is okay! :)

I say don't throw them out until they smell rotten. wipe the mold off and rub some athetes foot powder on the parts that had mold on them. check them regularly and repete the process, moldy eggs have hatched before. :main_yes: also i believe the perilite that contains miracle grow is sold by miracle grow and labled with their brand name on the bag.

Thanks ILoveGeckos14 and TheWhisperer! I will try making my own (picked up some today, in fact, and have it warming as we speak), and I know it's weird about the Hatchrite. I figured it might have been a faulty bag, so I opened my second one and noticed a few tiny black pieces as well. Maybe a few tiny specks are normal discolorations? I'm going to contact the Hatchrite company soon, and see if they can shed light on it.

In any case, I definitely hope my egg's okay, too, and thank you for your well wishes. My female appears to be quite gravid with her next set, but I'd love for these to survive as well. I think I may split the next two up, and put one in a perlite/water mix and the other in Hatchrite. Might be an interesting experiment! :main_robin:

Not a huge fan of HatchRite. I prefer my Supreme Hatch Material (SHM- of course), perlite, or vermiculite.
I tried them all out a few years ago and HatchRite was right at the bottom (for me).

My hatchrite has flecks of dark "mystery matierial" in it, they look like black flecks of pertlite. Since I don't know anything about the manufacture of perlite (which I should look into at some point, really), my best guess is that's what it is.

I haven't had a mold problem yet, though.
Glad you're changing the whole batch of it out, though.
Best of luck to you!
