Well I was on my weekend Petco trip. I needed to pick up more Cal w/o D3. I was looking at what they had and was approached by the sales clerk. He asked if I need help and what kind of animal i had. I told him i needed the cal w/o d3 for my Leo. He then proceeded to tell me he has one also and that i should be giving it d3 at all times.
I was in shock because like most petcos the Leos were on Cal sand and had bad living conditions. If you were a Leo owner and worked only in the Reptile section you should be helping these guys out not killing them. I told him about the site and said he needed to read up on his Leo facts. LOL

good for you!! i myself use to be a petco/petsmart person they don't use belly heat they don't care if they put in 12 males in one enclosure its very sad.and they don't care!(the big wigs) all they care about is the chart.the chart is what they can order.the first tier is geckos and b.dragons easy keepers.then if they sale those they open up a second tier more difficult repitles ..

Yeah, sadly that just varies from store to store.

I've been working at "blank"-smart for a while now, and our reptile specialists really know how to take care of all of the reptiles we display.

It's so unfortunate that some stores don't have workers who are educated in the animals they display. Giving them the link to this forum, or even just correcting them, probably is the best thing to do though.

;) Maybe you helped that dude out.

corporate should have some sort of training program so that there is at least one person at each store knowledgeable in the care of each type of animal they carry.

note this is not targeted toward any particular company :)

They do need D3, maybe not all the time but they DO need it, they just process it better than reptiles that are basking species. So he is doing what he sould be!

Since mealies and crix are so good at knocking off dust so fast I always used D3 every dusting. In the form of Vionate, Reptivite, Minerall I etc, I rotated daily.

Cali sand is bad, BUT D3 is a needed but no one is for sure HOW much at this point but they do NEED it to properly process calcium and possible other vitamins.

MBD is caused by improper absorption of calcium which may be caused by a lack of D3.

Not meaning to start an argument, but I have heard of most breeders only feeding calcium with d3 once a week or so, not //every// single feeding. The point is that regular calcium should be given the most, not calcium with d3. You even said in your own post that they do not need calcium with d3 all the time.

I'm sure everyone has their own opinions on calcium and vitamins, and I will respect those said individualistic opinions. :)

Also, what you quoted of my post was meant in the sense that bringing anyone to these forums to gather information is helpful. I apologize if that was misunderstood.

I was referring to the above.

Sorry for the confusion. :) And I still stand by what I said in my previous post. Everyone has their own ways of giving calcium and vitamins.

all of those supplements have VERY different degrees of D3 and MBD is caused by a lack of calcium absorption which is caused by a probable lack of D3.

There are very little to no known deaths from a D3 overdose (none that I have ever heard of) BUT you will find a lot of leos with MBD!

So have you done any scientific studies to know exactly whaty amount of D3 they need?

Have you ever put a UVA/B bulb above your leos just to see if they would bask in it and what affect it would ahve on them? ( I have )

Have you ever read any post from members who have been to places like Iraq who actually saw a leo run across the desert in broad daylight of 110 degree weather of their habitat?

Please Wendy,

I am not trying to argue with you, nor was I trying to diminish anything you said. Again, I am not trying to argue with you.

No, I have never done any scientific studies with my leo or my previous leos. No, I have never been to Iraq. I am seventeen years old and a leopard gecko hobbyist.

Please, quit attacking me. I was in no way trying to argue with you or put you down.

This thread has become sidetracked and turned into something it should have not, and with that I believe it is fair to say that we should both maturely stop unless there is a future post pertains to the actual subject matter posted by the original poster.

I am sorry if what I said was misunderstood, in no way was I meaning any offense.

well that was unnecessary...

What was?

The thread, the replies, etc?

The thread was against the TOS to begin with and yes you, others and even I got caught up in replying to someone that made incorrect statements.

So what was unnecessary?
