Here is the letter I sent. I hate using broad statements that really have no foundation (such as thousands of people out of work, yadda yadda, there's no way to truly quantify the impact of a Python ban). Since I'm a wildlife biologist, I tend to put a biological spin on things too. Feel free to use this letter instead if you so desire.

S373 aka the Python Ban is being considered in the Senate right now. The bill has been sensationalized and politicized and has no basis in real science. In fact, a report generated by USGS to justify this bill has been called unscientific by an independent panel of scientists. It is being pushed by powerful special interest groups and it will hurt me financially. It will not solve the problems proponents claim it addresses. Banning the entire Python genus for all of the US is an extreme overreaction with regards to the (genuine) problem of invasive snake species in Florida. These same species are not a threat to the entire US due incompatible climates. In addition, only a few species in the Python genus can possibly cause bodily harm to humans, livestock, and pets. For example, ball pythons reach a maximum size of approximately 5 feet and weigh at most 4 kilograms. States should decide which species they permit (as they do currently), not the federal government. The problem of invasive species is a function of natural history and climate; what is invasive in some regions is not in others. Therefore, approving an all-inclusive bill is inappropriate. This bill is driven by baseless paranoia and herpetological ignorance, not by science. This is clearly a situation that has become politically driven and ignores the science that does not support S373. Please do not allow politics to trump good science and sound policy. Please stop S373.
