I buy sphagnum moss from the local reptile shop for my moist hide. So far my leo has loved it. He spends most of his time in there. It seems to keep its moisture quite well and it's relatively easy for the gecko to shape it however he/she feels comfortable.

I'm not sure about the mites? Maybe someone with more knowledge can comment on that. I'm of the opinion that there are positives and negatives of every aspect of gecko keeping, and it's about finding the best compromise.

You can also try coco fiber. Good thing about coco fiber is that if you have a female, the moist hide will also serve as the laybox when she gets gravid.
