I candled an egg today, the one that's incubating at 83ish for 57 days now. There's a little red spot on the left when I candle it, but most is blacked out now. The bottom is almost blacked out, only showing bits of red, but the top and the rest of the egg is where I can't see anything. Is this good? Also, when should I be expecting the egg to hatch? Thanks!

Sorry, let me rephrase. When I say "blacked out", I mean just where the light cannot shine through, is this what you guys mean?

Great, thanks! Also..I'm expecting the egg this week, and some people have said that the eggs "double in size" the week before laying. Why hasn't this happened?

They may still have a few days, just give them time, they will nearly double in size..sometimes they do it a week before hatch, sometimes just days before hatch.. you will also notice that the red areas in the egg will candle more of a white glow when they are even more close to hatching :) The shadow/darked out area is definitely the baby and will be coming soon :main_thumsbup:

Thanks Mike and Jess for the quick reply, I was worrying for a few there =).
I don't want to candle again, the temperature changes around here has been insane; I'd rather not risk it until the temps inside the Hovabator are the same outside perfectly. I'll just keep waiting until the day I see a little Leo in the container then. At 83 degrees, it's been 58 days now, when do you think the egg should start getting bigger? Thanks again!

I really cant tell the difference between "egg getting bigger" Idea, but thats not a too reliable in telling if its going to hatch soon. At 83F you should be getting a baby from 55-60 days, but it could be less or more.
