I just recently noticed that my gecko has two scab-looking things protruding from each side of his mouth. He also tends to hang around the cool side of the tank, maybe its because of the hot weather, not sure. I tried looking up what it could be and the closest I got to was mouth rot. But there's nothing black(yet), they just look like scabs.
Hot side around 95 degrees,cool side 87.

Oh, my gecko had something exactly like this about 6 months after I got him. Never did figure out what it was, but it eventually went away.

What I did was moisten it about once a day with a wet q-tip and just keep an eye on it. The swelling went down in just under a week. My running theory was that a cricket bit him or he cut it on something, the scab eventually fell off and he was back to normal.

Keep an eye on it, and if you notice any further swelling or puss get your little one to a vet. You have a cute gecko, I hope he feels better soon.

Yes, you will want to keep an eye on it. Make sure it does not get any worse. What are you feeding it? You may want to feed items without a hard shell until everything is all healed up.

It's good to know that this isn't that serious. I feed him giant mealworms, so that couldve definitely been the cause of the problem. He still eats well, so that's a good sign. I'll switch to smaller and softer shelled mealies until this goes away. Should I dip the qtip in peroxide just in case it's a bad infection or just stick to water?

When I feed hard shell feeders like supers I usually try to dig through and find the ones that have just shed and feed those off first. Easier on the digestive tract too. I do not know about the peroxide, don't know how the gecko will react to it. You could use repti-aid.

I second the advice given here. Although I must admit, with those scabs it looks like he's giving you an evil smirk in those pictures.

"Use that peroxide, I dare ya." *chomp*

The gecko reacts just fine. Only thing is that to do this one does need to hold the gecko firmly by the head to clean the infected area (geckos usually dont like this). I first clean the are with a diluted listerine solution (applied by a cotton swab). I moisten up the area until the scab falls off..dont be scared if you see some blood...once the scab falls off get a clean cotton swab and apply the peroxide... let it bubble up...then clean it off and repeat the peroxide step...then i usually apply the rept-aid..but if you dont have rept-aid, you can apply some listerine solution again or just let it be..

Alex, I've never heard of using Reptaid as a topical. Is it just a dab straight from the bottle on a q-tip? Do you give orally in conjunction with topical application? How long did it take to completely clear up? How many doses were administered? I think its great stuff, used it for several different lizards, with excellent results. All were given orally but none was for any kind of wound infection. Are you doing the F.I.R.E show in Orlando this weekend?
