I bought a d40x today and played around!

Nice. First DSLR? Keep playing with it and learning how it works and you'll be shooting great pictures before you know it. Get a good tripod and remote shutter release if there is one available for your camera. Those two things will help incredibly when taking shots like the ones you posted and are just great things to have in your photography kit anyways. And always happy to see another Nikon shooter out there.
