I'm not going to outright call you a liar, but that post is sketchier than a dude with a neckbeard inviting people into the back of his van for free candy.

If you're going to write a post asking for free feeders... which is essentially what you have done here, it'd be a lot better if you either just flat out asked without making up some nonsensical crap or made the effort to tell better lies.

So your colony of mealworms* was completely eaten** by your dogs*** and now you think someone else should buy you new ones?

Why the [expletive deleted] aren't you just getting new ones on your own, using your own money and resources? Why in the hell should it be someone else's responsibility to make sure your pets don't starve? Finishing it with "would be okay" is just compounding the sheer audacity of the entire ridiculous scenario, you're panhandling on the internet for feeder insects, but you're going to pick and choose which ones you want to take. Just plain ridiculous.

*who takes the effort to breed their own mealworms? The time involved in the reproductive cycle and growing them till they're worth feeding combined with the need to maintain multiple groups makes it impractical to say the least.

**every single last beetle, larvae, egg and pupae

***dogs will eat some ridiculous things but in my experience they almost all spit out hard shelled beetles, even the ones dumb enough to try snorking them up to start

I agree that asking for free mealies is probably not something one should do but completely ripping the guy apart simply because of your own personal opinion is just plain ridiculous. Cursing at him to boot? If nothing M_surinamensis, you've clearly illustrated to the members of GF just how crappy of a community member you are. Thanks for the head's up!

Glad to hear you're getting some mealies OP! I've got 4,000 +/- so if you wanna' handle shipping, I would be happy to help you get your colony going. At this time I'm working with approximately 400 beetles so I obviously would be happy to sacrifice a few for your cause. Let me know!

Interesting choice of a thread necromancy target.

I've got this whole bit worked up, where I shout "Augh! My wounded pride!" and then clutch at my chest, stumble around making jerky gestures and knocking over the furniture and all in all give it about five or six minutes of really hamming it up as a sort of satirical death scene. It's mostly a visual gag though, so you'll just have to picture it yourself.

The guy who started this thread and who I replied to has twenty five posts on these forums. About half of his threads are him looking for free or heavily discounted stuff. He wants cheap geckos, he needs free feeders, he wants to trade random stuff... at the same time, the exact same times, mixed in with those posts where he talks about how much he needs free stuff, he's writing posts where he's taking in rescue animals, where he's breeding animals he has and where he's responding to ads people had up to rehome pets.

He had made it clear he can't afford the animals he has. He was simultaneously obtaining more animals. He was doing irresponsible, unethical things and people have tried to gently correct him, to guide him kindly with information which he has resisted, ignored or argued against. He was hurting animals because his whims are a higher priority for him than their health and he's not letting things like his lack of funds, knowledge or ability get in his way as he does so.

What he needed was a solid kick in the ass. To be told exactly what kind of person he is. The affable, friendly approach did nothing to dent his stubborn ignorance or to slow his abuse of animals. Some people need to be beaten over the head with an idea before they manage to grasp it. Something that can't quite happen here because of the rules about language and interaction that keep everything relatively clean and polite. I skirted the edge of it in my post, risking repercussions from the Moderators* and a temporary ban because I genuinely care more about what happens to the animals this chucklehead is neglecting than I do about his (or anyone else's) pwecious widdle feewings.

Context is so important, isn't it? I really am a pretty poor community member in a lot of respects. I am composed entirely of rough edges and am unwilling to compromise on much when it comes to the responsibilities associated with keeping animals as pets. There may well come a day when Kelli or a member of her moderation team asks me to leave, because my attitude and approach are not always in line with the sense of community that they want to build.** Until that point arrives though, I'll use my own best judgment about what, when and how I post. You, in turn, are free to assign whatever value you want to things I have written.

Although in the interest of fairness, I think it's only right to let you know that any efforts you might be inclined to put forth to trade verbal jabs with me or ostracize me, to punish me for my bad attitude... they're a waste of your time. Nothing personal about it, you just seem like way too nice a person to be able to get under my skin and all that'll really result from it will be a bit of extra work for the mods and a lot of back and forth that isn't in keeping with the kind of community you don't think I should be a part of. Your call though, just sayin' that I've been called a lot worse by people a great deal meaner and it's never been that effective before.

I don't disagree in general, however, there are a large number of people with working mealworm colonies. I don't come here often, and post even less, but your posts were worth it, thanks for that one. I like your use of modified footnotes.

I consider factual, informative posts and solicited advice the epitomy of being part of a community pet forum where members are looking for help.

Just saying...

Overall I would agree about not breeding your own mealworms, but there are some situations that warrant the practice. I am in one of those situations. I breed pictus geckos in addition to leopard geckos. I order 10,000 mealworms at a time for the leos, so breeding mealworms for them is impractical. However, the mealworms ordered are much too large for a baby pictus that hatches out at a half a gram. I have a small mealworm breeding colony that I use to get the tiny mealworms I need for the pictus babies. If I ordered mealworms for them the mealworms would grow faster than the pictus who eat them, so ordering the tiny mealworms for the small number of babies I have would be impractical.

For the originator of the thread:

As far as asking other people to give me something for free, I'm not so much into that practice. I do know several times on this forum I have seen posts from people trying to offload extra feeders, so it would be wise to search for those threads, and contact those people if the need arises. You might be able to avoid some of the issues you encountered this time around.

My dog always tries to eat my meal worms...I top my meal worms with the flukers calcium gutload and for some reason she loves eating it.. She has gotten into it twice so far. I think its the gutload she likes rather than the mealies but, she ends up eating those anyway lol.
