I just got this little guy today from JMG reptile (Thank you Jeff!). He's in shed in these pictures, but he already shed just hours after I brought him home! Hopefully I'll get better pictures once he's more situated into his new home.

Thanks for looking! I can't wait to go to the pet store tomorrow and pick up some crickets for him!

Thanks guys! I just got back from the pet store and my first feeding attempt was unsuccessful. When I tried to feed him, I took out all his hides and tried to tong feed him, should I just throw the crickets into his enclosure next time? I was going to try to feed him tonight, but should I wait until tomorrow?

What did you try to feed it? Fat Tail Geckos are known to be picky eaters, and rarely will they accept worms, unless thats what their staple diet consisted of before. Also i wouldn't remove anything from his enclosure...leave everything as it is and try dropping 5-7 crickets in the enclosure and leave them over night (since fat tails are nocturnal). I think he still needs time to adjust and I wouldn't worry. Make sure its basic husbandry needs are met as well, if not your gecko may have a harder time adjusting.

This is what i recommend to my new customers and is on my website:

"It may take some animals up to 2 weeks to fully acclimate. When your animal arrives handle it only to inspect it thoroughly. Then place it in its new enclosure and do not handle the animal. Try feeding it 2 days after the animal arrives. Do not worry if your animal does not feed, it may just need more time to acclimate. Once your animal begins to feed regularly you may begin to handle your animal."

And if you need any extra information you can find a basic care sheet on my website...here is the link: African Fat Tailed Gecko Care Sheet

Good Luck :main_thumbsup:

Thanks, that made me feel a lot better. I was just worried about him not eating today because he's such a little guy and he's still growing. I guess that it's good he didn't eat today because that gives the crickets more time to gut load.

Oh, and I don't plan on ever feeding him worms. Once he gets big enough, I may give him a blat or two occasionally. But for right now, I'm only feeding him crickets.

Yay!! He finally ate last night!! I just have one more question now. Whenever I reach my hand towards him he starts hissing and will even try to bite me. Will this attitude change over time once he's more comfortable in his new home?

His attitude will change as you continue to handle him and he gets use to be handled. However, wait until he eats regularly before you begin handling him on a regular bases. Handling can cause a lot of stress on a reptile, especially if they are not receptive to the idea.

I caught him sleeping today! He really loves to dig in his eco earth.

I know it's really bad quality, but I took it with my cell phone and I didn't want to disturb him.

Great pic! They love to burrow in that Coco-fiber! Mine does it all the time! I had to get a water dish that sat higher up and put a stone that she can climb on to get to it cause as soon as I clean her tank she starts burrowing and filled her water dish up with Eco Earth! lol

That's a cute gecko! I keep mine all on coconut fiber. It smells good and I can spot clean it. I really like your little fatty!

Thanks! I really like him too, haha. But he still gets a little hissy whenever I try to handle him (I've only handled him twice). But I've been told that that's normal for baby fatties.

I am wondering what the best place to get my first gecko is. I live in Indianapolis, IN and am having trouble finding very many reptile dealers in my area. What are the benefits of seeking out a dealer rather than purchasing from a pet store. The pet stores don't have much of a selection.
