I just started my mealworm colony about two months ago by placing the aliens that pop up in the feeding bowls into a tub of substrate in my rack. A few days ago I took all the beetles out and placed them into a new tub as the first tub was teeming with mealworms. The worms are still too small to feed but I should get over 500 feeder size mealworms in a few weeks.

Anyone know an easy way to get the worms out of the substrate? I heard that you could strain them out but my substrate is too large for that. As a result my second batch will have a much finer grade of substrate. I blended it into a very fine mixture this time and should have no problem straining the second batch.

It’s remarkably easy to grow your own!

good luck on picking those mealworms out, the only thing i know to tell ya is start picking now because it will take you awhile. lol. id dump it all out somewhere where you can lay it all out super thin so you can start at 1 side and work your way to the other and shouldnt miss very many at all that way

That's what I was afraid of...

Oh well, I'll just wait until they're larger and spread them out one handfull at a time...beats cleaning gecko poop!

Lesson learned!
