Well I originally used peat moss, but stopped because it dried out too fast and made eggs hard to find... Switched to long fiber sphagnum moss because I'd heard how much better it holds moisture... It definitely holds moisture very well and made finding eggs a breeze, but... Two of my females ingested it and thankfully pooped it out... I switched to vermiculite now and I hope it works out...

Anybody have their geckos eat the sphagnum moss?

Yup....my geckos have eaten it during a shed. They pass it pretty easily, but it makes me worry. At least with the eco-earth I don't see evidence that they've ingested it...but I'm sure they have.

A cricket once jumped into the moist hide and got tangled on a piece of sphagnum moss... She saw that thing hopping like crazy and ate it...never saw it come out, but i didnt dig through her poop. She never had a problem after that happened, so I didnt worry about it.

I use it in all my lay boxes and never seen it in their poo, I have been looking for it and I switched 2 or 3 months ago, I had the same thing happen that scott did but never seen any come out.

Thanks for the replys! I just wanted to raise the issue in case nobody had experienced this. The vermiculite is doing good for me and the ladies seem to have more fun digging in it!

Yes, I've seen one of my leos pass the moss as well. I'm leaving it in anyway as I'm hoping it was a one time thing. If I see it happening more often I'll try something new.

Hey Michael I think Paul Sage was going to do a test on that moss to see if it's harmful or something like that, I think he was going to try the organic kind. I dunno if he ever did though.

My geckos had eaten sphagnum moss and paper towel during shed, they had no problem passing the moss, but had a hard time passing the paper towel. I'm now using eco-earth too, the stuff do stick to their losen skin and get eaten during shed, but they seem fine with it. The only problem I have with this stuff is that I see bits of eco-earth in their nostrils, its not irritating them, so I guess its ok.

I've heard cases of geckos eating the vermiculite like candy, I don't know if it wil work. Although mine don't eat it.

I am using peat moss now, but it dries out extremely quick, I am interested on the long fiber moss as well, I would like to know if it is harmful, because I am definately switching to it or vermiculite.

What's the difference between Eco-Earth and Bed-A-Beast?

Michael, I had a young leo (2-3 months old) ingest some of ZooMeds Terrarium moss. I assume he got some while going after a cricket. At that time it was used in the moist hide. Unfortunately he could not pass it and died from impaction. From then on I wrap the moss in some paper towel so that it cannot be ingested. I do not know how much was ingested.

Brian, sorry to hear that. I noticed today that one of the females still has moss in her belly. I'm so nervous! Can a vet remove it or is it hopeless?

My vet was going to do surgery but wanted to wait till Monday at that time to see if he'd pass it himself. Like I said he didn't make it. This all happened over a year ago.

Good luck with your leo Michael. I would be pulling my hair out

I use bed a beast. and as asked above: whats the difference between eco and bed? Where I live bed a beast is cheaper and more pet stores carry it.
