well, since there is no tread for ponds ill post this here. ive wanted a pond forever, and i finally got one. its about 60 gallons. i did this the sunday befor i went to the hospital. being im a stone mason i was able to get the stone from free, and it took me longer to dig the hole than it did to put the stone togeather. it was about 3 hours of digging, and about an hour of stone laying. i have a couple gaps i have to fill in, in the water fall. i put a sucker fish, and got some comits as tester fish befor i get the EXPENSIVE koi that i want. one black, and one white butterfly ogons. and ofcourse being the major herp lover i am, what pond would be compleat with out the tadpoles. so here it is, and once i get the water perfictly clear ill have more pics.

thanks guys. yeah, liz plants were on the top of my "next thing to do" list. but i ended up in the hospital. any way, i have to add more stone behind the waterfall to make it more sturdy, and after that im going to put a jap red maple, some iris' and some other taller plants all behind and around the water fall. i made the border around the top almost 20" all the way around basicly as just a place to put your feet and loundge back, so i dotn want to put too many plants around the entire pond

Cool. I have about the same size pond that we put together last summer. We did a little bit of landscaping around it with mulch and a few plants. But last summer was such a scorcher that we really couldn't enjoy it much and the yard looked so horrible because we couldn't keep up with the watering (we had a bad drought). I'm anxious to get it cleaned out and up and running this year- will probably do in a couple weeks when I am not so busy.

Beware about your fish- I had a sarassa and two comets and a few tadpoles. Damned if the fish didn't come up missing, one by one. We think its a coon because we have a fence around our yard. The cat wouldn't dare get into the water for them, so it has to be a coon. This year I'm going to heavily plant the pond and try again with the fish. I'll post pics whenever it looks good enough!

The japanese maple would go great with the koi in the pond. Nice idea. They're pricey though. I got mine by taking a branch from my neighbor's trimming of theirs and putting root hormones on it.

Very cool man!

Being the crazed Japanophile that I am, having a koi pond/bonsai garden is a cherished dream of mine... Kohaku are my favorite of course!

lol, same here. If I ever get rich I'm making a giant koi pond with an island in the middle so I can sit there and watch all the gorgeous fish.

Looks good! Planning on upgrading in the future?...60 gallons is definitely not enough for adult koi...or even any goldfish for that matter

Koi need at least 1,000 gallons when they're grown to their full length. A rule for goldfish is that fancies (telescopes, orandas, lionheads, ryukins, and etc) should have at *least* 10 gallons of water for each. Single-tailed types like comets, shubunkins, commons, and sarasa comets need at least 20 gallons each.

So you could definitely put in a few fancy goldfish, or a few single-tailed types. But yeah, hold off on koi, they really are a huge commitment.

My uncle once told me koi are much more aggressive and destructive than goldfish. Does anybody know if this is true? Just wondering.

Definitely not. Koi are very docile. Goldfish are actually more prone to messing up a planted tank or pond then koi.
