My WiP "Geck-Cave" Custom Mega-Hide

The title is amazing, I know XD

So I came up with an idea the other day. I was hearing that lamps can blind your leo's somewhere on our good friend Internet. I told this to the petshop guy and he laughed at me saying "Well how do they survive in the wild?" This was a good point.

So I decided to compromise. 3/4 of my tank would be a dual level cave, the third quarter would be open space in the light. I would bury my heating rock somewhere down the middle so there would be the "warm end", the "cool end" and the "sort of warmish but still cool" end. A nice soft gradient.

I began designing tonight. Here is the sketch:

plans-1.jpg

This whole thing will be made from foam and painted and sealed, divided into three parts for easy cleaning.
The brown lump is an open area where my heating rock will be placed. There will be a thin layer of foam covering it so
a.) I dont have to see the hideous thing
b.) Sir Cornelius and Minerva don't burn their teeny toes.

There will be two entrances to the Geck-Cave (they will be small so only a few rays of light can get through).

there will be a pillar on the upper level of the cave for fun and two on the bottom.

The open area will be the feeding zone. The feeding zone will have ledges so mealworms can't get to the cave (not illustrated). The moist hide will be in that chunk of rock dividing cave from light.

Everything else is self explanatory. First time I've made a custom cage and I'm only a two day old Gecko owner so wish me luck :p

Oh yah! And also, what's the deal with the decimal system? what does 5.0 geckos mean? I don't understand, is that age? :p Thanks for the help,

-Julio

This is really awesome. Just keep in mind the temperature of the tank with all that foam in it. Also, I think what the "internet" may have been referring to is that white light will keep a nocturnal animal such as the gecko up during the day if they can see it, however for some reason their little eyes can't detect infrared lighting. I've always heard that red bulbs are better for them and they can't see it. <3 Just a thought!

Good design! It's really inspiring!

And the decimal system is how many you have of whatever is listed

I think the first number is male
Second is female
and third is unknown

For instance,

I have 1 male, and a baby Leo, so it would be

1.0.1 Leo or something similar. I think that's right anyway. ^_^; Don't quote me on this though!

I agree w/ the infrared light I use that bulb andit seems they are more active.which is because my room tends to bea littledarker andthey prob can't tell the difference between light and very well. But I understand the bulbi had one too and they nevercame out. Maybe use a uth instead of a heat rock? Might be a little easier.

Love the idea. nice sketch , but one thing I would change is use heat tape or under tank heater on a thermostat as opposed to your heat rock.

Great Idea! I also agree that you should use heat tape/uth instead of rock. Also foam is an insulator and probably wont conduct heat very well, but i could be wrong cuz i have never tried.
Feeding area is my favorite part. I like the idea so much that i may make a similar feeding area for my geckos. They get lazy eating out of a dish all the time.
Again awesome idea, Hope to see how it turns out.

Looks interesting. Very interesting.

I would also suggest a UTH rather than a heat rock... they can be dangerous/ too hot for leos.

Yeah I really wonder what happened with this project I would of liked to see it. The guy I got my male raptor from has a similar set up and it was pretty sweet. I like the whole idea minus the heat rock.

Nobody has brought up the idea yet, but that heat rock could heat up enough/malfunction and burn the foam, releasing toxic gases, or even catch on fire.
