My wooden rack

I'm not particularly proud of it... In fact I wasn't going to post it. But I remembered how much I love to see other people's handmade stuff and decided to publish it.

If anybody wants to see something in detail or know about I did something just ask. These were my first handmade tanks and I wish I had more help sometimes...

looks good to me and as long as it gets the job done, who cares if it's a masterpiece :)

Thanks for the comments :)

How are you not proud of those, they are just plain awsome.
There are many details that are not easy to spot in the pic, but make the rack look bad when you take a closer look. For example, the ventilation holes are badly made (I'm not too skillful with the drill...), there are some screws out of place, the wiring is visible everywhere... But well, in the end, the geckos aren't going to mind that and it looks better that a plastic rack. Being it my first rack, I'm fairly satisfied with the result but not really proud.

That's nice! How did you build it?
I went to a DIY department store with the plans and the cut the melamine for me. The pieces are assembled with allen head screws. The rails of the glass doors are made of PVC, also bought in the same store, and glued to the wood with silicone... The glass doors were ordered from a glazier's... Come to think of it, I basically designed it and put it all together, but didn't cut almost anything myself.

The wood and the glass costed about 160€ (230$).

What kind of PVC did you use for the door rails- I thought PVC was a tube? :main_huh:

Looks awesome, by the way! If you wanted to finish up the holes and the wiring- couldn't you tape the wiring up with something and maybe sand the holes?

PVC is a hard plastic. I guess there are also tubes made of PVC.

About the wiring, I guess I could tape it with something but it wouldn't look too good. I started installing the cables without having planned it, and I shouldn't have done so. Now some are longer that others, they are in different directions... I find it difficult to tape them. That's one of the things I take into account if I do more racks.

The problem about the holes isn't that they aren't sanded, but that I didn't manage to drill where I marked I should, lol! I'm a public menace with the drill.

Thanks everyone!

Congrats on that rack!!

I think that when you set out to build something for the first time -you always find out what you could have done differently-after it is finished

I think that is a fantastic first effort!!
:main_thumbsup:
Consider it your prototype-lol

Do you know what those PVC fixtures are called? I can't find it looking on the internet.

I'm afraid I don't really know how they are called in English... Maybe "slides" or "rails" for sliding doors. I bought them in PVC because they were cheaper, but they are also made in aluminum.

Congrats on that rack!!
Thanks Sandy!

Edited: This is a pic of the pieces, so you know what I mean... Sorry for not being more helpful.

What are you using as a heat source in your rack?

I love that setup and am thinking about doing something similar. I really just want to be able to see my babies all the time and easily get them out.

I'm using heat cable, it's quite convenient for racks (at least here, that we don't have flexwatt). It's more or less visible in the first pic I posted, in the empty tanks, under the tiles (to prevent the geckos from touching it).

Wow! Nice job! There's a first for everything, and you did a great job on your first rack. I think it's cool that you can view the leos without having to pull out sterlite containers. :D

Thanks, ataber! That would make trying to build a cage so much easier to have... I totally missed you are in Spain, Sandra. Oops! When I finally make it to the hardware store to check stuff out the pic and that website will be really helpful, if I don't just buy online.

I guess that means my English is not that bad, I'm flattered, hahaha :D Post some pics if you decide to make the cage yourself, I'd love to see it.

Thanks! :D The truth is that I enjoy my geckos much more now than when they were in plastic containers.

Good job on the first rack, I know how you feel though, things never really come out the way you want them the first time. That's exactly the reason we stopped building our own, haha. :p

BTW, your English is great. :main_yes:
