I just found this forum :) We've had tanks off an on for years now. Since moving to Fl and seeing the natural tanks I decided to make my own. I'm sure it sounds terrible, but I don't interfere much with the tank, except to add chemical remover to the new water added and change the filter every other month. But my tank is thriving.
Has anyone else set up a natural tank with minimal interference? Do your fish have thier own food sources? If so what do you use? Livebearers? Shrimp? Different plants/algea?
Ours is a small freshwater tank with real plants that I'm going to make bigger, soon as I figure out where to put the tank.

I've set up a small betta tank that was pretty much self sustaining. I had anacharis in the tank and pothos growing out of the tank. I allowed the anacharis to grow into a jungle. Once the tank became established, I only fed the betta every once in a while but she seemed to do well finding things to eat in the tank. Ive also set up a self sustaining pond. It has anacharis and water hyacinth, a few goldfish, and a colony of minnows that is constantly breeding. The only thing i do to the pond is fill it up when it gets low.

Heres a pic of the betta tank in its early stages...
