Need advice on peat moss

Hello everyone. I've been using a wet washcloth in my leopard geckos humid hide. But I keep reading that peat or sphagnum moss is better. Last night I bought a bag of Greensmix sphagnum peat moss from the local garden supply. Is this safe for the gecko? Also should I put the moss in a mesh bag or is it ok for the gecko to be directly on the moss? I've also read that I should boil the moss before using it. I just wanna know what is the right substrate and the right way to use it? Sorry for such a long post and thanks in advance.

I use New Zealand sphagum moss by zoo med. I put a folded paper towel over it. I dont boil it. Didnt know you were supposed to do that (lol). Lots of people use different substrate and different methods...so Im sure you'll get lots of suggestions. Have fun choosing and welcome to the forum :)

I myself will be getting a load of sphagnum moss next week. The place im buying it from sells it to reptile parks and zoos.

You could wash it first, like rinse it in a colander to get rid of any small particles but if its high quality you really won't need to.

Sphagnum Peat Moss

This stuff looks like garden dirt. I don't know if it's the right stuff.

I use Sphagnum Peat Moss.
I sift it to get rid of sticks and long sphagnum stems. ......
Sphagnum Moss is another product. (too rough) can scratch
the underside of the gecko.
Also think another is called Peat Moss.
I have used both the others before.
Sifting Sphagnum Peat Moss makes the mix as soft as talcum powder.
Yes, it will resemble dark earth, but so will Peat Moss.
The females love lying and laying in it. Holds moisture and warmth well.
I only use it in the female layer hides during the laying times.
All others and non egging times get dampened White paper towels.
Some cheap ink designs may cause allergic reactions.
Perlite is my choice used in the incubation containers.
All products give less worry/concern with NO additive label.
Take care. Hj
