I'm in a pinch. My ex called me the other day asking if I had room to take a gecko that needed "some love". I thought she meant it wasn't being taken care of properly and just needed a few things from the way she was talking.

I called my local vet to get said gecko for a checkup. My local vet is just over an hours drive and she's out of town until the week before Christmas. The next closest vet is two and a half hours from me.

Here's the problem. The leo came to me last night, we got him out of the container and I almost fell over. He lost both of his eyes to an infection it looks like, has some mouth rot, shed stuck to his feet, a piece on the top of his head and stuck in where his eyes were. We worked on getting the shed off but he's very aggressive.

When I asked my ex where he came from she said a girl she works with brought it in when her boyfriend didn't want it anymore. It hasn't pooed in almost a week and who knows how long it's been since the last shed.

He's very lethargic but aggressive if you try to touch him then he goes right back to laying there. I don't want to wait until after Christmas to get him into the vet because that just isn't fair to him, he's been through enough it seems.

My options are kind of limited but I need to do something. When I was at a reptile show I walked past a table with people talking about how their beardie was too old and they had to put him in the freezer. I really don't like the idea but I don't want to make him suffer more than he already has only to take him to the vet and let her put him down. Is that something to think about or should I toss that thought out and never think about it again?

I edited this.

I originally said you should put him down, but if he has a fat tail and can still eat, and you have the TIME and patients maybe you should give him the care he needs.

Thats terrible that because of someone else being lazy it puts you in a place to have to make a choice like that. Best of luck to you in helping this leo.

i'm very sorry to hear this. the poor thing :(

but if you feel that he will only continue to suffer. and there is no chance for him to thrive, and there is absolutly no way possiable that you can get him to the vet. then this is what i've read.

i haven't got the experience that others may have. but i have read (here on the forums) "that you can place him in the refrigerator, for several hours, the gecko will go into a cold coma. and then you may place him in the freezer"... just placing him in the freezer could be painfull due the the fact that ice crystals could form in his blood.

again very sorry that you were placed with the burdon of even having to even contemplate a decision of this nature. :(

Edit: the best alternative if you cannot get him to the vet would be a air tight C-02 Chamer! and then...the other "at home" method

I read this post, and started crying. I cannot imagine having to go through something like this. I would never be able to do that.

I have heard of blind geckos making it, but of course they need a ton of TLC, and that is not the main concern here...it's the possibility of an infection being present due to the loss of eyes and mouth rot (which is sometimes an external symptom of a different internal issue).

I really feel terrible for you having been placed in responsibility for this poor creature. His previous owner needs to be shot. I wish you the best of whichever route you decide.

Are there any other vets working at the practice where the closer vet is? What Im trying to say is to treat him you would have to have a reptile vet, but to put him down (which I think is the general opinion of what needs to be done) the vet would not have to be a pro with reptiles. I work at a vet clinic that does not specialize in exotics, but when I receive a rescue that really has no chance I take it to work to be put down. I really feel for you (having been put in this place with many animals my self) and I wish you the best whatever you decide to do.

Is it possible for you to get some pictures of the geckos, so we can see how bad he is? This should allow us to make a more informed opinion on what you should do.

I'm going to try and get some pictures tonight soon as I get home from class. They won't be as good since my camera is borked and I'm using my phone.

That is the saddest thing I think I've ever heard! He might not want to be a BIG meanie but being blind is hard especially with animals they get frightened very easily and it doesn't seem like he was handled much so a human hand is like a big monster!..

Does he show signs of MBD!? Because he doesn't look like who ever had him cared much.

I was told pinkies are good food for blind geckos. This is cause they can't move very fast.

I think you should put him down. Sounds like he is suffering a lot. What was wrong with the previous owner?!? He shouldn't have bought the gecko in the first place!

He's in a better place now. Doing that was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. I felt horrible for a while even though I know it was the most humane thing to do and it was painless.

I fail to understand why some people ( like the previous owner) would even get a pet! They have to realize that any pet is a responcibility. I am sorry for what you had to go through. Atleast the little guy isn't suffering anymore.

i see stuff like this all the time where i work. people bring in animals near death and try to give them away. it's depressing that people don't think to give them away before they're suffering so badly.
