New beardie questions

I just got my first bearded dragon at a reptile expo.. No planning, so we went in and bought everything needed. With only a small amount of research I did not know babies couldn't be kept on ANY kind of loose substrate (which I found through researching after the fact).. So, I was sold a flakey type of wood bedding, which I was told was cured, or baked, or something of the sort, and was completely digestible. Is it ok to use do you think?
And instead of a basking lamp, AND a UV lamp, I got one that does both.Is this okay?
Also, I was told to partition off part of the tank until he/she gets bigger, I'll put a picture.. Do you think it's small enough?
Any tips? Here's a picture of the setup (I've taken the wood out for now, and put her/him on paper towel), and a picture of the beardie.
Thanks in advance!

No, this is not OK to use.

That should be fine.

Equivalent to a 10 gallon is about the right size.

Cute little one.
Might I ask what they recommended that you feed him?
Glad to hear you took the wood out.

Thanks for your help! The person I bought the animal from seemed to know alot. He said small crickets that fit between their eyes 2-3 times a day, as much as they'll eat in about 10 minutes, and dark greens like cilantro, kale, etc. every day. The person who sold me the wood chips was a different vendor.. I believe it was lllreptile.

babies and juvies will consume more insect protein than greens and as they get older, it's exactly the reverse. make sure you are feeding supplemented and gutloaded insects and always offer greens like mustard, collareds, etc...

and definitely do not use that wood as substrate. some very well known breeders have beardies on washed play sand all their lives, but i prefer paper towels for the little guys. your setup looks nice.

Thank you! I'll check out the chart!
I was actually surprised when we got him/her home, within 30 minutes he was eating lots of greens, and crickets when I gave them.

beardies are piggies, especially when they are younger. i don't think i've ever met a beardie without a killer appetite, lol

Ryuu wasn't much of an eater til recently- she was REALLY picky... but we had a talk this winter lol I told her I was NOT doing worms again, she'd have to channel her inner beardie and eat crickets... lol

I had my beardie on that calcium sand that everyone says not to use. I know it was a risk but he did just fine. pooped everyday. quick ? is the bulb that you bought an incandescent light bulb that says it produces uvb. Or is it one of those really expensive UV Mercury Vapor bulbs. if it is just an incandescent bulb it will not produce any uvb though it will claim to do so. only the coil bulbs, a florescent tube, or the UV Mercury Vapor bulb will do the trick for a uvb source. also i would put in some kind of small water bowl for him to soak in. you might already have one though. there is a rock like thing in the pic that is blocked by the cage top so i dont know. i know mine slept in his the whole first night after we got him. i dont think the pet store was treating them right.

anyways good luck.

I panicked for a moment there, haha. Just looked it up and it's a Mercury vapor bulb. Thanks for letting me know about that though! And yeah, I have a water dish.
